  • Budget Flying to Bangkok and KL (3K, FD, FY, AK)

This report will consist of a trip to Bangkok just last week as well as a trip to KL in late July, all flights on budget airlines. Another interesting aspect is that apart from Changi, I would be arriving/departing from 4 different airports on my 2 trips!

Did another half-yearly "pilgrimage" trip to Bangkok with my partner just the previous week for some shopping, praying, massaging, dining and tailoring. It was a rather late planned trip but on the way up, Jetstar was able to offer some rather attractive fares. I had also redeemed 9,600 Qantas FF miles for a one-way ticket up, which is inclusive of 20kg luggage allowance and paying only S$34 in taxes. However on the way back, due to the end of the school vacation, all flights were rather expensive. We managed to get the return flight on Thai AirAsia for a rather reasonable price, considering that prices increased rather rapidly nearer to the travel date.

Checked-in online earlier and pre-selected our seats for free. My QF redemption ticket had also allowed me to choose the extra-legroom seats for free, but however as my partner's ticket required a fee to be paid (S$20) for emex rows, we slumped it out on normal rows, which was not too bad a thing as we ended up having a row of 3 seats each!

New attraction at Changi Terminal One, Social Tree!

The Valuair-titled Jetstar A320, 9V-JSN, would be operating our flight from gate D30.

Lufthansa whale just arrived, with lots of Jetstars and a Qantas parked at T1.

Reached the gate when boarding has commenced. Entering the rather newish looking 9V-JSN.

This aircraft was fitted with new slimline seats, which are touted to be more comfortable and offer more legroom than the previous generation of seats. The clever design by moving the magazine pocket to the headrest area of the seat has dramatically improved knee-room and made flying on budget seats much more bearable.

    From another angle.

No complains from my long legs! So much better than the seats on the older planes, or any other 180-seats fitted A320s! I was able to stretch my legs right under the seat in front, and with knee-room to spare too!

    At the gate.

Boarding was done very efficiently as flight was barely half full. Thus we grabbed a row of seats each after aircraft doors were closed on scheduled. 4 crew on this flight, 2 guys and 2 ladies. Again, all rather professional in their service delivery.

Pushing back from the gate. Crew also did a manual safety demonstration.

Spotted Jetstar's new A320 with sharklets!

Started the very long taxi to Rwy02C. The wind direction has changed on that day, giving Singapore a respite from the very bad haze just experienced days before.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViyTt6T56D8

Spotted the following planes taking off. Firstly, a Shanghai Airlines B763, operating a flight to PVG on behalf of China Eastern.

    Followed by a Silkair A320.

And another Jetstar A320 just ahead of us.

With not too many departure traffic, we made a rolling takeoff from Rwy02C, for the 2hr flight to Bangkok!

    Magazines and stuff.

    Above the clouds.

Shortly after, immigration forms were distributed followed by pre-booked meals and drinks. This was followed by the buy-on-board snacks/drinks carts. Observed quite a number of Caucasian passengers with pre-booked meals. Guess they were connecting passengers from Qantas?

Looking at the prices of the onboard menu, we decided not to order anything. Save our dollars for Bangkok! Anyway, below is the onboard menu.

Crew conducting sales of snacks and drinks. This was followed by duty-free sales.

      View of the cabin.

      Flying into the sunset.

Slightly more than half an hour prior to arrival, the pilot announced the start of the descent. Surprisingly, the crew immediately had all passengers seated upright and seatbelts fastened even though we were still a few minutes away from actual descent. This is rather unusual for Jetstar to prepare the cabin so early for arrival, and indeed a couple of passengers did asked the crew why the need for preparations so early. Heard the crew replying something to them something about bad weather and sure enough, when descent started into the thick clouds shortly after, we encountered some bumps, but they were not too bad. Guess the pilots had informed the crew to prepare the cabin earlier for landing due to the expected bumps on descend.

Just after breaking through the clouds.

      Descending.

      Waiting to disembark.

Another view of the new seats.

We parked beside a TG A380!

Quite a wait at immigration before we got our bags. By the time we cleared immigration (and we were one of the first from the flight), all bags were already out on the baggage carousel.

Again, a short and pleasant flight on Jetstar on a short regional hop from Singapore. I really liked the new seats and Jetstar definitely has found the correct formula for comfort with these new seats for us budget passengers!

For this trip, we decided to check out a brand new boutique hotel, which is currently having a soft-opening. Not all facilities and rooms are ready yet, but I guess once everything is up and running, prices will go up too! The hotel is Mode Sathorn by Siam@Siam. A very convenient location just beside Surasak BTS station. Prices are very affordable and being new, not many guests as well.

          http://www.modesathorn.com/

We were not allocated the biggest rooms but our room has a very comfortable bed and obscenely huge bathroom! Only in Bangkok would you be able to get such nice rooms at low prices. Felt a bit like W hotel but without the W-prices.

Of course, some prayers made at the prominent worship places.

Made a "coffin" donation at the Hua Lamphong temple, where the money would be used to assist the under-privileged.

Of course, checking out the shopping centers. Visited the newly-renovated Siam Center which has now a rather cool-looking design!

For the flight back, we would be flying on Thai AirAsia, which is currently one of the few budget airlines based at Don Mueang, Bangkok's previous gateway. It would be interesting to revisit this old friend! Taxi ride from the city to Don Mueang (DMK) is faster than to BKK, but the cost is approximately similar by taxi due to the higher toll charges to DMK.

Currently, all airlines are utilizing Terminal 1 for flights, with Terminal 2 also due to reopen if traffic continues to climb. Checked in and dropped out bags at the AirAsia common check-in counters with no fuss.

Boarding passes are issued on receipt printouts.

Due to the fewer international departures compared to BKK, immigration and security are so much faster! Entered the departure area, which has been newly renovated with duty free shops and some eateries.

Most of the flights were dominated by the AirAsia group, with a few Orient Thais in between.

As there are only a few airlines operating from DMK, plane-spotting is thus not as interesting as BKK. Here, a Nok Air B738 is pushing back from the domestic wing of the terminal.

Orient Thai B734 and AirAsia A320, the main operators at the international wing.

              Gate area.

More AirAsia aircrafts. Quite a number of TG aircrafts are stored at DMK, including the A300s at the distance. TG's A345s and some B744s are also stored at DMK.

Something out of the ordinary? Yep, an Air New Zealand B772ER is also at DMK for maintenance!

Our plane at Gate 23. It is a special livery aircraft, painted in celebration of a thai rock band, Carabao's 30 year anniversary.

Boarding was just starting when we reached the gate.

Boarding by aerobridge rather than stairs! Guess aerobridges are cheaper to use in DMK....

Hot seats. Other than being at the first few rows and red headrests, there is nothing particular "hot" about these seats.

Again, prebooked our seats at row 24 E/F. Not wanting to risk the chance of being separated, especially since the flight was almost full! Boarding was quite smooth even though it was not done by rows.

Legroom. For once, I much preferred Jetstar's legroom!

                At the gate.

With everyone onboard, doors were closed and we started out pushback without delay, especially with the lack of traffic at DMK. All female cabin crew today, with a flight time of 2h5m to SIN.

Pushback passing the "Nemo" NokAir plane.

                    Setting sun

Lets take a look at the onboard menu. Only on Thai AirAsia can you have a mango sticky rice inflight!

Service started, first with the distribution of immigration forms, followed by pre-ordered meals from a cart. Crew were tallying their meal manifest versus pax boarding chits prior to handing out the meals.

With the rather affordable prices for its inflight meals, we pre-booked 3 meals to share at 120baht each. Each meal came with a 100ml cup of water. The meals were prepared by a thai restaurant chain, See Fah.

                    Basil chicken with rice
A Thai favourite rice dish, as juicy chicken is stir-fried in a handful of spices and fresh sweet basil leaves are added at the end to give it a fragrant touch.
This was delicious! Chicken was tasty and spicy, and the accompanying rice was fragrant and fluffy. One of the best meals I had on AirAsia!

                    Dada's chicken with sticky rice
Thai style roasted chicken with delectable sticky rice served with Thai sweet mild chilli sauce
                    An interesting and tasty dish.

                      Roast chicken
This combo is most favoured for its flavour and texture as we marinate our chicken thigh in a special blend to further enhance its natural goodness. Served with a side of roasted potatoes, carrots, green beans and BBQ sauce for an all-around fulfilling meal.
This was just ok. I found it a tad too salty for my liking though.

After pre-booked meals were distributed, buy-on-board snacks/drinks were sold, Quite a number of takers. Guess with affordable prices, passengers would still be willing to spend onboard.

Duty-free goods and AirAsia merchandise were sold as well. After the trash were cleared, there was nothing much to do except entertaining myself with the view outside the window.

                      Avoiding storm clouds.

Sunset shortly before we start our descend.

View of the cabin. Lots of advertising on the overhead bins.

While approaching Changi, we made a detour around some fierce looking storm clouds. Also enjoyed a lightning show! Flight was still rather smooth as we were able to avoid the storm clouds altogether, although it added some minutes into out flying time.

                      Taxiing to the gate.

                      Parked beside a QF B744.

It was a smooth flight on Thai AirAsia. Unlike other budget airlines, the AirAsia group does not charge too high prices for ancillary items such as meals, baggage, seat selection etc which I really appreciated as i am able to "enjoy" a meal for a very reasonable price inflight. When the price is right, the AirAsia group is still a recommended carrier to fly with.

Continuation of my report, this was a weekend trip I took with a few colleagues to KL. Being the person in charge of booking the tickets, I found for all 6 of us very affordable airfares to/fro KL, with the flight up on Firefly for RM99 all-in each (including 20kg check-in luggage allowance), and return on AirAsia for RM45 all-in (excluding check-in allowance) each, total for around SGD60 per person for a round-trip to KL! A superb deal I would say!

Firefly now operates from Changi Terminal 2 along with the rest of the ex-Budget Terminal airlines. Check-in was swift and hassle free at the almost empty counters an hour before departure and was handled by DNATA. Proper boarding passes were issued, unlike the boarding receipts previously issued when Firefly operates from Budget Terminal. Guess FY wants to distinguish itself from the rest of the LCCs.

Immigration was hassle free and soon we were in the departure hall. Not much variety of planes spotted.

Four Silkair aircrafts in this shot!

                        ANA, Silkair and SQ.

SQ A330 taxi into the gate.

Our flight would be departing from gate F55, which seemed to be a dedicated FireFly gate that day.

Tiger A320 at our gate... not. It was parked at the adjacent F56.

Our gate would be a bus gate as the ATR72s operated by Firefly would be too small to dock at the airbridge stands. Instead it would be parked at a nearby remote stand.

                        9M-FYB

Down the stairs to the holding area and soon boarding was announced by row numbers. No difference as we were all packed onto a single bus.

                        At tarmac level.

Boarding the bus that will ferry us to the prop.

Our prop was parked at the stand just after gate F60. 9M-FYB would be operating the hour-long hop to Subang this morning.

Welcomed aboard by 2 very friendly and well-groomed Firefly girls in their fresh and new uniforms.

Settled at my seat at 6F. Flight was about 70% full today, with the front few rows rather empty.

Firefly branded seatbelts. Legroom is sufficient for this short flight.

All the stuff in seat pocket, including MH's inflight magazine. Well, Firefly is a MH-subsidiary afterall.

Very efficiently, all pax were boarded and doors were closed. Safety demo was performed. Flight time was 1hr, with actual flying time of about 50min.

                          Pushback and engine startup.

Taxied to Rwy02C for takeoff. Passing by the old Budget Terminal tarmac, with terminal already torn down. Quite a number of private jets owned by Sands Corp. were parked there, most probably flying high rollers in.

Takeoff from Rwy02C, bound for Subang!

We initially encountered some bumpy weather.

But it soon cleared after we climbed higher. Flying altitude was 16,000ft. Service announcement was also made.

Firefly is the only airline that offers a free choice of snacks and drinks on flights to KL. Shortly after seatbelt signs were switched off, a crew first came down with a basket offering choice of snacks, followed by another crew with choice of drinks on a tray. Service was excellent!

This morning, we had a choice of peanuts or chocolate chip muffin. I requested for both, which was gladly offered by the crew.

For drinks, there was a choice of soya bean milk or apple juice.

                            Cruising at 16,000ft.

Soon, we started our approach into Subang. Flew past Subang during descend.

Making a 180degrees turn to align with the runway.

                            Approaching Subang.

                            On finals.

Parked at the stand and engines shut off. We were right on schedule.

Disembarking from the rear, where the friendly crew bade everyone goodbye.

Right under the wing of 9M-FYB.

Resting on the tarmac before the next flight.

Berjaya Air ATR72 has also just arrived from a domestic flight.

This was my 3rd flight on Firefly and it was as usual, a very pleasant experience with great crew and much welcomed refreshment service. Coupled with the small terminal in Subang Skypark, hassle free immigration and customs and short distance from the city, I managed a record time of just 3h45m from my home doorstep in Singapore to hotel doorstep in Kuala Lumpur!!

Last installment of this report, the weekend in KL was just spent eating and shopping. Some of the food we had...

Return flight was booked on AirAsia on its last KUL-SIN flight of the day. Departure was at 2125hrs but we arrived at the airport earlier for dinner. Our chartered transport from KL city center to LCCT took almost an hour despite smooth traffic!

Checked-in at the manual bag-drop counters and out of 6 of us, 3 got the first row hot seats while I had the emex row hot seat. Scored! Guess it "pays" not to do online check-in on AirAsia haha.

Departure hall of LCCT. Last few looks before it gets torn down next year, hopefully....
