    djjlo: Thanks for reading! Yes, the food is quite distinctive, and very tasty if you enjoy Sichuan chilli, and hua jiao pepper.

    The hua jiao pepper is really something...and they use it very liberally in the cuisine there...

      Great TR, hope to visit it this/next year! Would think HaiDiLao in Clarke Quay is the go-to hotpot spot currently, and it's much fancier than the average ones in China

        Fantastic trip report, yflyer! Thanks for the insight to the local Chongqing cuisine, that hotpot looks delicious.

          Thanks for the Great TR yflyer! Sichuan cuisine is among my favorite Chinese cuisines, and the hotpot looks very mouthwatering to me. Never been to Chongqing but now I see a reason to go there!

          How similar is the hotpot to what we usually know about Sichuan food?

                SQGamespeed: Thanks for reading! I knew very little about Chongqing before this year as well...realise that I have been missing out on a good thing!

                Very similar food in Chongqing and Sichuan (after all, I believe Chongqing was part of Sichuan Province until 1997 until it became a separate municipality). That said, there are probably some regional differences which I will ask the locals about the next time I am there.

                      I asked my colleagues in China this week what the difference was between food in Chengdu (In Sichuan) and Chongqing...their answer was that Chengdu cuisine was more ma (i.e. numbing, from the Sichuan peppers) than la (i.e. hot), whereas Chongqing cuisine was more la than ma. That said this was the viewing of a Beijing native, so a Chengdu local might have a different opinion. I certainly found most dishes in Chongqing quite fiery...
