    Hey Frequent Flyers,

Long time lurker, first time poster

Here’s a brief EU TR that I did last month. The wife mentioned she had a work related trip to Geneva scheduled for January 2012 a few days before Christmas. Since we have been to Italy twice - in ’09 and ‘11, thought it would be a great opportunity to visit Portugal and Spain. Heard so much about it, read extensively on what the two countries had to offer in terms of culture, food and the historic sights. Unfortunately, due to constrains, all we had were 8 days to enjoy a short holiday, kids were back in school, and I had a few assignments lined up before and after the scheduled series of dates. We decided 'What the heck!’, shortlisted and agreed on Lisbon and Barcelona.

TG were offering their winter promo to Europe, called them directly and asked if I could do a F to the EU and C back to Singapore on the TG scheduled 77W from Bangkok to Frankfurt, They agreed! All I had to do next was to get the other remaining flights to Geneva, Lisbon, Barcelona and Zurich via LH, LX & TAP.

It was hard for me to lug a 22” cabin bag, my winter clothes in a slim garment bag and a huge DSLR camera. Stopping every other minute to take a shot was challenging, so bear with all the pics I could and more importantly could not. Enjoy the story, and the pictures.

Journey of 15,495 miles outlined via a pictorial display:
    SIN-BKK-FRA-GVA-LIS-BCN-ZRH-FRA-BKK-SIN

The scheduled date of my solo departure to Geneva arrived, left Singapore’s Changi Airport at 8.15am local via TG 402 - SIN – BKK - HS TGR - 777-200ER/777J in C class.

Aircraft pushed back and departed on time. Load in C was light, only 8 pax in C. Ample legroom on bulkhead - Row 11.

Arrived at the Royal First Class Lounge in Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport from the arriving gate – C9 with the TG escort and buggy, will skip the usual photos.

Shown into my private room, had 2.5 hours remaining before I had to catch my 77W bird to FRA, I ordered a sandwich before my scheduled spa appointment. Lounge was quiet, only 4 rooms were occupied.

Headed to the Royal Orchid Spa for my hour long complementary message.

Took a shower after the message, sorry no Kyo tribute shot here gents, returned to the lounge for a quick smoke. The well ventilated chamber` is able to accommodate about 10 pax, luckily I was the only one there that afternoon.

All F paxs - 6 of us, had to leg to Gate C10 without the buggy. Gathered my belongings and casually walked over. I have seen this monument a hundred times, still have no idea was it represents, can anyone chime in?

I arrived at the gate, handed in my boarding pass and caught a glimpse of the lovely bird that was ferrying us to the land of teutonic efficiency, the Thai Airways 777-300ER/77W dry leased from Jet Airways. Was informed that all remaining pax had boarded the a/c and ready for push back..

As we marched through the gate into the aerobridge, I took the opportunity to say hello to the group in F, 6/8 pax - a quiet German couple, an American couple, and a German man with a 8 month old baby who had his suite assigned in front of me. Being a father with two kids, I can only empathize, been there before.

The chief purser and a female FA greeted us as we arrived through the a/c threshold. I reserved suite 2A, not too near the galley in front and the toilet behind. As I settled in and took my seat, the female FA brought me my first glass Dom Pérignon.

Sorry, no pics were taken from door closed, push back, taxi and take off, until we reached the appropriate altitude and the seatbelt sign switched off.

The FA brought me my next glass of dom. For those of us who have yet to try Thai’s 77W product, I must say the seat is very comfortable, plush and not too bulky, the features like light and seat control very user friendly. My 22" cabin bag did fit under the ottoman snugly. The best part would be the privacy. Found this suite more cozy than the cold all leather suites on SQ’s A380 which one gets lost in. All this, for a fraction of the price.

The RR Trents are surprisingly not as noisy when compared the GE90 on the SQ 77W

@ CarbonMan, thanks for reading. More pics forthcoming.

Barca is indeed wonderful, the shopping and food, memorable. No worries if you do not speak Spanish, animated English does help somewhat. Since you will be in Barca, try Lisbon too. Flights into Lisbon are affordable on TAP. One very good reason for you to visit - The people, magical! I have never met a group of people that are genuinely helpful, sincere and honest in all my stays. The Portuguese are IMHO, are really cool and gracious hosts - part of thier culture. Right from the moment we arrived till the day we departed, almost everyone we met endeavored to make our stay pleasant in one way or the other. Best part of all, the food, drinks, shopping and hotel stay was the most affordable within the EU – dare I say ‘Very Cheap’ - sorry, just the Singaporean in me. We had a 5* Hotel room for less than 200 Euros, a real bargain. The taxis just as affordable, and no long detours, never met Taxi Drivers who were that honest in all my life. The food, pastries and shopping - for just about anything one would want to buy, was just part of the magical adventure i experienced. Although we were there for 3 days, the short stint really inspired me to plan another trip to Portugal, with a longer stay in Porto and Sintra included in the itinerary, next year perhaps.

I stumbled upon this site after i returned, checking out the TRs prior to posting this report, I was surprised to have read 9V-SIA’s detailed report on Barcelona. Both of us went to almost the same place one would go to when in Barca, talk about coincidence. Kudos 9V-SIA, good job, I could not have done it better.

@ Carbon Man, read 9V-SIA’s TR

Hmmm... am currently aiming for Apr 28-May 12 so that I don't clash with the school holidays. Planning to hit BCN for a few nights to see the city and surroundings. Then, drive/train to Valencia for another few nights, then to MAD, few nights and back to BCN by train. I like to drive because I like to stop as and when I like the countryside and small villages. Am thinking of driving up to Andorra as a side trip, just to get an interesting passport stamp!

But nothing is confirmed yet ...

Lunch time. Amuse bouche served, I got the table ready for lunch. Browsed through the menu and waited for the Lobster Thermidor which looked more like cray fish. Seeing my displeasure, the FA brought out the lamb after which was palatable. Sorry, don’t like caviar, never had, so I skipped it. Come to think of it, no one else had it, not even the baby.

First course - Beetroot and gruyere chese

Main course #1 - Lobster Thermidor, Duchess Potatoes, Carrot, Green peas in Tomato Cup

Main Course #2 - Roasted Lamb Loin with Hazelnut Herb crust, Pinot Noir Wine Parmesan Risotto, baby Vegetables

Dessert - Apple tart with caramel ice cream and Tawny port

Finished lunch before we reached India, time for a short nap. The female FA helped with extending the seat, placed the duvet which was pretty thick and the blanket. Told the FA I would skip the 2nd food service and would like to nap till I reached Germany.

Just remind that all 77W use GE90, including those TG's 77W

Strangely enough, just like all good TRs posted, I woke up momentarily while we passed the Afghanistan / Turkmenistan border. The view over the Caspian Sea as the sun was setting was breathtaking. As we inched our way into Russian airspace I resumed my sleep.

Woke up to the sound of the cockpit crew announcing the final descent into Frankfurt, the FAs were trying their best to wake anyone who was asleep, including me. I scrambled to the bathroom, changed and packed my stuff. I returned to my seat with 10mins to spare before we touched down. Sorry, the cabin was dark, hence no photos, so I sat back and waited till we rolled down the runway and arrived at Frankfurt where a chilly 2 degree awaited my arrival.

Overall, the flight pleasant, the crew their level best to accommodate our request despite the language barrier. I asked for the female FA for her name and told her that I was sending a compliment letter. As she came to bid me farewell before we disembarked, she passed me another sealed Rimowa Amenity Kit.

Spent two hours in the packed and dismal Schengen LH lounge. It was packed with travellers returning to the EU. Not much can be said about the array of food and drinks. Arrived into Geneva at 11pm local and spent the night at the Starling Hotel. We left for Lisbon the next day.
