  • 747-8 Type Rating

    Hi,

I am just wondering if the 747-8 has a common type rating the with the 747-400? Can 747-400 pilots drive the 747-8 on the same rating?

    Thank You

Certainly. From what I read and seen, the Boeing 747-8 flight deck follows the same basic design principles as the 747-400. The 748 obviously has newer avionics and several advances in technology concerning the EFBs and ND/MFD. Here is an article that talks about it:

The same goes for 787 and 777. Although initially the 787 overall looks different from the 777, there are several similarities. For instance, the overhead panel of the 787 is almost the same as the 777. The main instrument panel of the 787 has four large LCDs instead of the five on the 777 (six, if you include the lower EICAS).

Here is a lovely picture of the 747-8 flight deck. Very similar to the 747-400.

A normal 747 doesn't have the personal flight pocket on each side of the cockpit right?

If i remember only the 777 has it.

So i 747-400 pilot can jump right into a 747-8 without any training?

And the same goes for a 777 pilot > 787?

I'm not too sure about the personal flight pocket, but the addition of the Electronic Flight Bag is an entirely new feature in the 747 family.

I would not necessarily say that. The pilot might have to undergo transition training just to get used to the new avionics and software of the flight deck systems. I would assume that it would be somewhat similar to Airbus's common cockpit philosophy where an A320 pilot can fly an A330 with just several days of "Cross Crew Qualification." Same would apply for the 777 to the 787 because of the slight new arrangement of the EFIS in the 787.
