The Singapore Airlines sarong kebaya design was designed by Pierre Balmain.

Not studied the history of Malaya in school yet?

You could also ask why the national language in Singapore is Malay and why Singaporeans sing their national anthem in Malay.

We are indigenous Malay land. And yes as phaleesy pointed out our national language is malay and our national anthem is "Majulah Singapura." many people automatically relate Malay with malaysia which is I can understand but in truth both Singapore and malaysia (brunei as well) are original Malay land. Many malay foods are prominent in Singapore and almost all of our dishes have chilli which was inspired by malay cooking. Our colloquial language Singlish has many Malay words and many chinese dialects spoken in SG have words from Bahasa Melayu. I've noticed that many Malay Malaysians have the misconception that Singapore is completely Chinese and that all Malays living here came from Malaysia which is not true at all. As Singapore Air pointed out the SIA kebaya was in fact designed by pierre balmain who was inspired by the Malay/Peranakan dress. The MAS version was later designed by a fashion school in Malaysia.
