  • Lost luggage

Just received a phone call from jhm. He has arrived in Nagoya without his suitcases! LH has given him £40.

He's looking forward to some shopping, courtesty of Amex Plat or BA Amex plat.

I hope we get the bags back eventually because one of them is my backpack containing my fav summer clothes for my stay in Singapore and Vietnam.

I believe that he has a short connection in FRA. Thus the bags did not make it to the FRA-NGO plane on time. I am sure LH will load it the next day flight. I am not that worry. Have you checked the bag status on line?

Note: You dropped him off in a wrong terminal right? May be the bags did not make it to his LHR-FRA flight.

Over the past year or 2 I've managed to make a profit out of my travel insurance company thanks to delayed baggage...

LH and FRA means high chance of finding your bags eventually. If it's due to fog-induced chaos at LHR however.....

Unfortunately, the next LH flight isn't tomorrow (Tuesday) but Thursday!

Even more unfortunately, it's a BD miles booking and I think I paid using my BD Mastercard rather than my BA Amex. This means "only" £300+£300 (after 48 hrs) compensation from the Amex Plat (which covers all travel however you pay) compared to £750+£250 compensation with the BA Amex (only for travel paid using that card)!

How do you check the bag status online ? Not that I'm bothered too much - I rather like the idea of travelling light.

          According to LH webiste:

          Baggage tracing online

About the progress in finding your lost baggage you may inform yourself through our baggage tracing. To use it you need your document number (see above).

Please check again whether the entries are correct, especially your name and address as well as the description of your baggage. Please report wrong entries immediately. The respective address you will receive online after the login to the baggage tracing.

Dear Moderators, should we close this thread and combine it with jhm's 'how not to start a trip' trip report? Thanks.

LH lost my luggage last X'mas when I arrived in NGO.

This year in Japan again, it's the turn of CX who couldn't manage a 90-minute CX to CX connection at HKG today. So I get to FUK this evening and before the bags come out, an annoucement is made for me to go to the service desk.

The case will arrive in FUK tomorrow but I'd be in TYO by then ... and it takes two days to deliver a case from FUK to TYO. By which time I'll be in OSA so they'll send it there. In the meantime, CX gave me a cash payment (I haven't opened it yet to see how much) together with the usual (Japanese) profuse apologies. And I have to go shopping again on the Amex insurance and I hate clothes shopping (particularly in Japan when everything seems too small for me for some strange reason ). Perhaps I can pick up another suitcase if my later JL domestic 1-class allows 2 pieces of check-in luggage (anyone know ?).

CX losing my luggage was irritating but something else happened which I at least find funny (really!). Clearing customs at FUK, the inspector became really excited when he found out that I'm from Europe (lots of drugs come from there he explained later!).

And even more excited when I explained that I'd flown since yesterday LHR-FRA-HKG-TPE-FUK. And I'll be leaving FUK very early tomorrow and flying FUK-KMI-ITM-HND rather than simply direct to TYO.

He asked me repeatedly whether the "no prohibited items" answer I gave on the customs form was correct. Eventually, he even pulled out a sheet of pictures of pistols etc and asked the question again!

I eventually managed to escape but not before they'd emptied out the contents of my hand carry; X-rayed the case; and had one of those touchy feely body searches.

The customs inspector was very polite throughout and helped me pack my case afterwards. He explained that it was his job to check etc. All perfectly fine by me - I didn't get bothered at any stage at all and (having nothing to hide) found it more amusing than anything else. I might have changed my mind if he snapped on a pair of latex gloves to check just in case...!

That was my excitement (so far!) this X'mas. phaleesy on the other hand has had luggage lost (whereabouts unknown!) and has just been denied boarding by EK at SIN for a flight to CMB! Luckily, SQ (after being paid of course) have come to the rescue...

Sorry to hear about your luggage. It must be said you were pushing it taking checked luggage on a manic itinerary like yours. I do similar trips a few times a year and wouldn't dare take checked luggage, as much out of not wanting to wait at the carousel every day as much as the risk of it going awol.

                Why was that ?.

Sorry to hear about your luggage problem.

How did you know it was the connection in HKG which snagged your luggage? The problem could have been at FRA or TPE where it might have been mistakenly offloaded.

When I'm reunited with my case, I still have the return journey to go!

I'm sure phaleesy (who I believe spent the night in the KF Gold lounge in T3) will be along to give more details later but I understand the reasons given by EK included the ticket number being invalid; "the TA stole the ticket" (!!!); having an onward tix from CMB (somehow it was evidence of wrongdoing); etc. They even wanted to confiscate the paper tix but had no leg to stand on as it doesn't belong to them.

The CX person at FUK said that my luggage hadn't made it to my connecting flight at HKG.

CX are too damn efficient - I arrived in Tokyo this afternoon, checked into my hotel and found a voicemail saying my case would be arriving at 3pm (and it did). All before I'd had the chance to buy a new suitcase ... and other "necessities"!

(The instant comp which CX gave yesterday in cash was JPY 10,000.)
