F-1 Season to Start in Australia After Bahrain Calls Off Grand Prix
    By Alex Duff - Feb 21, 2011
The Formula One championship will begin in Australia next month after Bahrain called off the season-opening race because of anti-government protests in the Gulf state.

The Bahrain Grand Prix, which was scheduled for March 13, had been in doubt for more than a week following the civil unrest. No decision has been made on rescheduling the race, Formula One chief executive officer Bernie Ecclestone said. The 2011 season will instead begin March 27 in Melbourne.

“We felt it was important for the country to focus on immediate issues of national interest and leave the hosting of Bahrain’s Formula 1 race to a later date,” Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa said in a statement yesterday.

I don't think there was any other choice.

Teams will now likely stay in Spain for another test and their equipment that is already on the way to Bahrain can be forwarded directly to Australia.

A shame about Bahrain but I think it's for the best.

Can't wait for Melbourne GP... taking a couple of days off work for it and have also booked flights for Singapore GP later this year. Was there in 2009 and can't wait to be back!

Had earlier decided to boycott Bahrain GP as a protest to shootings of civilians.

Here's to hoping that Team Lotus will beat Group Lotus, on track and off. Either way, Malaysian's tax payer money has been placed on the casino table.

I can forsee alot of pain at Proton. And Najib time his rescue to perfection.

This season has indeed started with not so good news. First with Kubica's accident then now this cancellation.

Hopefully, the on-track activities will make it as exciting as last year.

The RAAF F/A-18 display has been cancelled this year. So has the Roulettes.

I may still do the Malaysia and Spore GP this year, how do we get our hands on the SQ Tees? DIY?

Any votes on the best looking 2011 cars? Mine are cast firmly on the Torro Rossos. Until it crashes into something....

I have some SQ tee shirts, but they are only about 3cm by 2cm. Most SQTalkers will know what I mean. I think someone here made a few up at one point. (will have to check back through the threads) You could always DIY them.

                        That's smashing Singa Sling!

Btw, anyone decided to be Silver Kris Sling?

30mm x 20mm will be fit nicely on my finger.

Traditionally, Bahrain GP is a yawnfest. It's a shame Abu Dhabi was so bad last year. Such a stunning track!

I'm also tempted to pop in for the Shanghai GP. have the whole stand to yourself.

Locked in the SIN F1 and the AUH F1 this year as soon as the dates were released before the hotels could lock out staff rates

Seems there'll be alot of tears and spins this year as the KERS need to be timed perfectly with the ARW (adjustable rear wing). Or it's the nearest amrcor backwards.

Gunnar S, are you staying at the Yas Marina Hotel? If yes, could you guest anyone in? I'll shout the drinks! The glass bridge would be a splendid place to 'feel' the race.

Spoke too soon? Oman has joined the revolution...
