  • Indonesian food recommendations in Singapore

I could have titled this 'Best Indonesian food in Singapore' but as food is very subjective, and of course as everyone knows all 'awards' are bollox , I thought I would ask for people recommendations.

Some family members have asked to go to for some Indonesian food, non-Hawker on this occasion, and as I have just tended to go to Tambuah Mas in Paragon, which I do like, I thought I would ask the seemingly large number of foodies ( and Indonesians !! ) on here what they think.

If you like padang-style food, I would recommend Rumah Makan Minang, they serve the most authentic beef rendang in Singapore.

Also, do try Ayam Penyet Ria. They serve very nice ayam and iga penyet. But be careful with their sambal, very tasty but it can be too spicy for foreigner.

      I like The Rice Table
We put labels on people and fight wars over them. If we truly want harmony, we have to get past the labels.

Pagi Sore isn't bad at all, and they are quite community minded which is a nice touch

Be wary of the sambal.... my last trip to Pagi Sore made my throat very sorry for an entire month

Absolutely no problems here, even asked for extra (and extra lime also!)

Hmm okay Mr. MAN Flyer let me throw in my 2cents and the opinion of an Indonesian (you know who ) living in SIN. First of all nothing here is as good as in Indo.

For informal Padang style I would say Sari Ratu (Pahang St. - Arab St area) is pretty good. However, I think you may be more looking for a restaurant type setting so I would say IndoChili on Zion Rd (opposite Great World City) is quite good and our favorite at the moment.

IndoChili is very good, but IIRC there's no airconditioning? (or if there was, it's very weak as the main doors are open)

As a former Indonesian, I say no indon food here is quite the same as back home, which is unfortunate because there are so many Indonesians here. Just strange that not many is starting food business.

for me, I only frequent one place when I am craving for the taste of home. It is a no-frills place on the 2nd storey of Lucky Plaza. But I don't think it will suit MANFlyer.

So for a more upscale setting, when I was a student, Tambuah Mas was a favorite. The food is good though the taste is not quite the same as home.

Or you can perhaps try Garuda Padang Cuisine at Orchard Central 7th storey. I never tried the Singapore branch, but I really liked the Pluit, Jakarta branch. And I think they belong to the same group.

Also note Indonesian is very diverse. Padang food is completely different from Javanese.

Spicy food isn't a problem. We eat spicy food regularly and find for example the same named Indian dishes in Asia nowhere near as spicy as we get in the UK.

Indeed, those Jakarta Girls are very hard to please.

It wouldn't bother me. I spend a large chunk of my time in Singapore eating in Hawker Centres.

Tambuah Mas is the one I've been to the most due to it being recommended by an SQTalker with a hard to please missus and it's also close to the Hyatt.

Oh, Forgot to mention that the no-frills place at Lucky Plaza is called Resto Surabaya. Level 2, towards the rear

From a few past visits I would say that Tambuah Mas is still decent, but has slacked off a bit as of late. The popular opinion at home is that IndoChili is consistently better and hence the preferred choice now. The air-con seemed fine on the last visits though we sat quite far from the entrance.

For informal (not quite hawker and not as seedy as Lucky Plaza ) I would still say Sari Ratu is a good and tasty choice though it is Padang Style food meaning you pick and get it served on little plates for all to share.

Hey at home we make Sop Buntut based on Hotel Borobodur recipe and it is enak (gotta say it, but it really is good ). Maybe we should consider opening a place and just specializing in that? Leftovers get turned into a nice Nasi Goreng buntut. Ahhhhh .... But oxtail is blo*dy expensive here so got to charge a premium

Yes definitely. IndoChili is Javanese while Sari Ratu is full fledged Padang style.

Have you tried shopping at Foodie Market Place @ Tiong Bahru? You can get frozen oxtail relatively cheap there. But what I usually go there for fresh premium beef - very competitive pricing.
