  • Straits Times: Non-SIN based subsribers here?

Just curious: any non-SIN based subscribers to the Straits Times here? Particularly to the Internet version.

I personally find the Southeast Asia and Asia coverage a good supplement to the BBC coverage of Asia Pacific. It's always nice to get a feel for the local life in Singapore, just as the NY Times online provides me a feel for New York City living.

Yep. I've just re-subscribed, having done so previously for a short while and then letting it go.

I used to subscribe to that and the SCMP but let both of them lapse - too much to read, not enough time!

Yep, I do subscribe to the online version.

Keeps me in touch with Singapore since I'm living downunder.

It great because the local media does not provide much news about the rest of the world nor most of the stuff that appears in the ST.

I don't subscribe, no time to read plus somehow I think it would take away the pleasure of reading it when I'm there. Singapore and the Straits Times almost go together as well as Singapore and a Singapore Sling.

My favourite headline from the ST was

          CRIME WAVE HITS SINGAPORE

When reading the story it turned out that three bicycles had been stolen in just under a month.

That's exactly why I subscribe. It shows how other-worldly concerns in other parts of the globe seem to be compared to those in LON.

Agreed. A big bonus on BA ZRH-LHR flights for me is that I might get to pick up the ST in ZRH before boarding my flight.

To be honest, I never liked the ST. Even when living there I don't think I bought it more than a handful of times, prefering to get my news elsewhere. In general their journalism was, IMHO, just atrocious. I remember a front page story about ducks living under a bridge...

Ah yes, I remembe asking for the New Paper on a SQ flight but to be told it wasn't available!

I admit I don't really read it for the in-depth journalism: just to get a feel for what is happening where my brother lives; for the lifestyle section (which food is being featured, for example) ; and for overall Southeast Asian events, because the region interests me.

Hey, the website had that T3 video podcast recently.

OK, I can see how someone (just not me ) would choose the ST as a source of SIN/Southeast Asia "lifestyle"-type news. It just gives me a chill that anyone would think of it as his or her primary news source , which is why on principle I decide not to patronize it.

Agree with jjpb3, always look forward to picking up a copy on SQ (although missed it completely somehow on my last few trips) - only complaint is the large format, which isn't Economy friendly

Woo-Hoo, just seen, I'm now SQTalk EG!

You mean you have not mastered the way of folding the papers like you do in the tube?

Nah!, never happy unless I can unfold the paper properly - and few things worse than having grubby printer-ink fingers whilst trapped in an Economy seat

used to read the Straits Times online every day when it was free, I still do ocassionally look at the free stories, I do enjoy reading the print version when I'm in country and have adequate space to manouver it, I even managed to read a copy that just happened to be sitting in the cafe at ACMI in Melbourne, it was out of date, but so good to read the EVERYTHING IS OK section (the "Home" section )
