  • When does Changi shut and reopen ?

I just read an interesting post elsewhere about LHR explaining that there's a night time curfew until 6am with a quota (with the flights selected by the airline) permitted to land before that time and even then, no planes should land before a magic time of 4:32am. From a BA pilot:

The big red book BA pilots live by has 2 sections 1 about night quota movements (NQMs) and how non NQMs may not land before 0602. So that is the legal night restriction. It also has a similarly phrased bit about NQMs not landing before 0432.

In the 0432 bit though it says that even if ATC clear you to land you shouldnt. Permission to land before 0432 must be sought from BA under all circumstances, whereas, if your restriction is 0602 then if ATC clear you to land before that you can without asking BA. That points to an operational rather than noise restriction.
Since AFAIK Changi does not operate 24 hours, I was wondering whether anyone knows what similar night time rules there may be ?

To my knowledge, SIN is approved H24 for ops but there are several noise abatement procedures such as restricted departures from 20R 0000-0600hrs unless closure of 20C/02C and use of idle reverse only for normal ops on 02L/20R 0000-0600hrs. Unlike LHR where the departure tracks pass over residential areas, the departure tracks from SIN are over the straits of Singapore to reduce noise.

I believe that 20R being used for departures only if 20C is closed for inspection occurs throughout the day, not just at night. From my observation this past 20 season all departing flights, even from T3 and SATS cargo terminal, are channeled to 20C as long as it is open. When 02 runways are in operation a/c may depart from either 02L or 02C.

Changi does not close as there are still flights departing from 0100-0600hrs, although traffic at this time is very much reduced. Some examples include SQ62 (SIN-DME-IAH, 0230hr), MU5094 (SIN-KMG, 0300hr) and CA404 (SIN-CTU, 0200hr).

Many SQ longhauls from Europe and the US are also scheduled arrive between 0430hr and 0600hr.

Interesting question there jhm. I've been wondering too..

Does Changi commence double runway operations even in the wee hours?

On the contrary, carriers are actually encouraged to transit in the wee hours as CAG gives a hefty discount on landing charges if they can turn around within a window period. Of course, not many bite the bait.

And one must not forget the freighter aircrafts as they thrive during this hours as a handful arrive and leave during this period.

And based on my observation, one runway is usually closed during this period for maintenance.

Changi has no closure restrictions on it as far as I am aware. It's open 24 hours.

That is one of the main reasons LKY went against most of the advice at the time, which was to develop Paya Lebar, and went ahead with Changi.

I would imagine all flight paths to LHR flies over some residential suburbs including one from the west that passes over Windsor Castle - don't want to wake up the Queen, do we?

At Changi, they either bother the NS boys at Tekong or the Indonesians at Batam or Bintan. The former are usually too tired to bother.

Was told by someone who worked at the airport... Normally after 3am no more flight (unless there is delay) and will start crowd around 5am.... So those on night shift normally will "sleep" around 3-5 am

It's quite true that are no more passenger flights after 3 am but you get an avalanche of freighter flights after 3. Namely KE, JL, BR, NH, KZ, LH, UPS, FX,3S, 8K and of course, SQC. So, if you're on the passenger side, you can get some "rest " during these hours. But for the others, it just gets more hectic as freighter flights are more difficult to handle for those on the ramp.

I understand that the sunsets are also quite spectacular from there. Too bad no cameras allowed.

                            Perhaps only when booking out.

That's true for departing passenger flights (MU5094 leaves at 3am and the next flight is MU772 at 5am) however there are some scheduled arrivals during this block, such as SQ12 arriving at 3.05am and MU771 at 4am. After 5am a number of SQ flights are scheduled to arrive from Europe, but many often land around 4+am.
