I actually do take the onibus in Rio, especially the one that goes along the shoreline/orla #360 (the former S20) where I get off at Recreio after the beaches of Barra, walk down Praia de Macumba, and climb over two hills to get to my favorite surfing beach, the stunningly beautiful Prainha.

Sorry to hear that. The last time I was in Santa Teresa during carnival was in 2006 for Carmelitas (last I did carnival in Rio was in 2009, went to the ensaio of Viradouro in downtown Niteroi across the bridge). I am also away from meu Brasil brasileiro on carnival this year, but...

...that doesn't stop us from singing!

    Just for you AsiaCommuter

    sing along now!

Balança, balança, balança Carmelitas vem ai
vem nesse bonde com esplendor e fantasia
dezesseis anos a serviço da alegria

    É carnaval,
Santa Teresa abre as portas pra folia
    Deixe de lado a tristeza
    Esqueça a mágoa e o dissabor do dia-a-dia

    Vem brincar com a gente
Nessa familia tem espaço pra vc
Daqui do alto ecoa o canto da cidade
Sou carioca o Rio é felicidade

    Abram as portas do convento
    As carmelitas vao sair
    vou escorregar no trilho
    E sambar até cair

    Abram as portas do convento
    As carmelitas vao sair
Vem me dar beijo na boca, meu amor,
    Estou aqui!

Here are some images and the music from last year's Carmelitas during carnival in Santa Teresa

Well, I have certainly done the Macarena in my day...even did it to the Bollywood cover version!

The biggest song and dance craze this past spring/summer in Brasil has been Michel Telo's Ai Se Eu Te Pego, a forronejo or fusion between forro influences represented by the sound of the accordeon and musica sertaneja or Brasilian-style country music. Complete how-to-dance instructional clips are on YouTube, but here's a clip of Michel Telo on the Xuxa just to show you how popular this tune became

Yes, very true! The wife was telling me all about it this week. Sounds a great time as normal... she said the rain dampened the party atmosphere a little early yesterday
