Ohh... So you must like the "real old" hotels, ie furniture & decor that's been used for ages, all faded, scratched and falling apart

Jokes aside, the decor is indeed a bit "over-the-top".

I heard that their best staff have been poached by competitors hotels in the newly opened casinos. Also, there's a change of GM. Hence the poor service. Pity, when I was there previously in 2008, the service was excellent. But then, I booked a suite, so maybe different treatment.

      St. Regis Singapore

      Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has stayed at the St Regis in SIngapore? We're staying at Traders on the way over to London (usually stay here - great price, lovely staff, great pool & Tanglin mall close by) but have splashed out for a bi of luxury on the way back through!

Have never stayed at the St Regis so would love to hear others opinions!

      Thanks!

Rob, St Regis is superlative in quality and class. Traders Hotel in Singapore is good but they are at least 2 notches below St Regis. Furthermore they are only a stone's throw from each other.

I have stayed there a few times, although not for a while now as I never seem to stay at Starwood properties in Singapore these days. It is undoutedly a nice place, and a great location for Orchard Road shopping. I remember the breakfast being pretty impressive and I did like the bar there.

So, is a full comp-ed breakfast given to Plats?

"Choice of 2 Breakfast Venues on Weekends:

Brasserie Les Saveurs is located at lobby level
                Saturdays 6:30am – 10:30am
                Sundays 6:30am – 10:00am

LaBrezza is located at level 2

                Saturdays & Sundays 9:00am – 11:00am"

I'm giving this place a try today

Yup but it's not the more expensive brunch buffet, which starts after the breakfast buffet ends

If you like Traders - why not try their 'big brother', the five star Shangri La. Not far from Traders and Orchard Rd and they have just reopened their mid-level rooms in the Garden Wing. An old style hotel with a real focus on service. And I don't even work for them - just enjoy the location and the service.

I was never expecting the brunch buffet, merely the breakfast buffet as is standard

And, on a whole, with the exception of one or two points, it was an enjoyable stay. The best SPG option in SIN (wasn't hard, I must admit). But I did enjoy it more than the Conrad or the Hilton. Sorry MAN Flyer

Like you say, claiming to be the best SPG option is Singapore is not much when the only competition is the awful Sheraton.

I don't know what it is about the StR, but I just don't like the place. I'm not struck on the one in Bangkok either. Having said that, it's a couple of years since I stayed there so maybe I should give it another try. I know the W is due to open in a few months and I'll give that a go, although I will never be a regular there with it being on Sentosa. I see the Westin has a big banner up now as well showing where it will be so I look forward to trying that as well.

Singapore and Starwood are a strange one for me as it's my primary hotel programme, the city I visit as much as any other (more or less), yet I haven't stayed in a Starwood property there in the last few years.

I just don't like the brand. Admittedly out of a small sample (a handful of times in SIN, once in Florence and once in Osaka), I really can't see what the attraction is. A butler seems pointless. I like my hotels sleek and minimalist and not the faux (and tasteless) old world St Regis look.

Especially when he/she takes 45 minutes to get to your room on multiple occasions..

Indeed - not quite 45, more like 15 (fastest instance being 10) minutes on my watch. I find the ones at SGS BKK quite the speed demons by comparison

There might be something in that. It's all a little too stuffy in a way.

Having said that, I like the StR in San Francisco, although not as much as the W there, save for the Bentley ride to the restaurant that a fellow SQTalker managed to persuade them to take us to despite it being well outside the supposed allowed range from the hotel.
