How strict is SQ with regard to overweight baggages?

IIRC, S class is the one-way fare offered online. It is under the "Flexi" category and is the most costly of Economy tickets, more than half of full Y.

Yeah, my friend who was booked on a one-way S fare was given 40kg baggage allowance. He wasn't migrating.

SQ officially gives you a 10kg allowance on top of your standard allowance if you have proof of study in the UK. A UKBA T4 Visa in your passport is accepted as proof.

Also if your on a migration flight you get more baggage allowance, double i think..

Not limited to UK students, this also applies to US, Australian and NZ students to name but a few other countries...

Valid student card is also sufficient enough proof, my SO recently returned to BKK after completing her MIB (Master of International Business) - she was overweight by 8kg (IIRC) and she paid $AUD160 or thereabouts for excess - she thought that was quite steep, I told her she got off pretty lightly compared to the $AUD300 she got slugged with ex-BKK last year for being 10kg over

She was also bemused at this as well, as apparently Thai nationals flying TG wouldn't be slugged anything for that kind of excess

We will be going from Cork via Heathrow to Sydney on an SQ ticket. That means we will check in with Aer Lingus at Cork.

I don't think anything will happen until you reach 25kg and above. I was 30kg leaving Zürich in January, travelling with a friend who had 20kg. The check-in clerk averaged us to 25kg each and said that was fine. I think it can depend on where you leave from and who you get check you in and the discretion they apply.

Yes. The allowance can be combined. In your case, 2 Y pax without any status will be 20kg x 2, so 30kg with one bag is fine

Same reason why in some terminals at LAX, the pilot has to shut off the engine and the plane is towed to the gate (maybe 20 feet)... unions!

Believe this is for some safety measurement for cetain size of aircraft and gate location only.
