SIN-KUL - Should SQ Make Magazines Available In Y

Just out of interest - are most pax on these flights connecting to/from long haul flights or are they O/D? I ask because I think that could be an important variable too, as to SQ's reliance on the shuttle flights. I stepped off a SIN-LHR in July and noticed that a fair amount of pax on that flight had connected from KUL. I've always had the impression that SQ relies on the shuttle flights more as feeder services than actual O/D revenue generators in their own right. All opinions shared are my own, and are not necessarily those of my employer or any other organisation of which I'm affiliated to.

I would normally have said something along the lines 'Good grief, I can't believe someone's complaining about lack of a magazine on a half hour flight', but as this was the first thing he said to me the other day after I was raving about the fabulous recent flights I'd had, I know he has a bee in his bonnet about it.

I agree with you Kyo. SQ want to be a premium airline then they need to maintain a product difference to LCC's, and that includes 30 minute flights!
Its like the removal of the appetiser on SIN/BKK - its infuriatingMy SQ and flying Videos: Youtube My Travel Blog: AussieFlyer.net

That is an alternative that Pax make a decision on and save a bundle flying LCC for the lower price booking. Seems the airfare has come down on that sector to as low as SGD168 in EY for SQ possibly because of competition from the LCCs and I believed my previous bookings were more expensive. Wonder if MH put mags on the flight? If they do, perhaps a switch to MH may help some and it is voting with the wallet.Originally posted by sqdazz View PostI agree with you Kyo. For the short leg, for myself I think I can do without a magazine

As you've somewhat walked into this I'd say 'It's only a 30 minute flight to LHR so I can live with that'.Originally posted by Kyo View PostPut it this way: If BD removed their cheese toastie on domestic routes, there'd be a few bloody unhappy English folk...
By the way, be careful about saying English when you should (and probably did) mean British. They get upset about things like that north of the border, and they write in and everything.

It is a 30minute flight, granted, but I would be surprised if SQ doesn't provide magazines on the flight. Without these little finishing touches, why would anyone want to pay $250 for a SQ flight when Tiger or Air Asia charge $50 for the same route?
If they want to compete and convince people to pay 5x the fare, they surely need something to compete on.

Many people consider various things dispensable, but once its gone, they want it back... I remember a conversation about SQ ketchup, for example. True - it's possible to live without it, but would they prefer to? Nope.Originally posted by MAN Flyer View PostAs you've somewhat walked into this I'd say 'It's only a 30 minute flight to LHR so I can live with that'.

So I'd say, I'd walked out of that one.
Will bear that in mind - British, it is!Originally posted by MAN Flyer View PostBy the way, be careful about saying English when you should (and probably did) mean British. They get upset about things like that north of the border, and they write in and everything.

I love and collect the Silver Kris magazine. And I happen to think Silk Winds makes for a great coffee table mag since it has all these lovely editorials on the happening hot travel spots in Asia. Would I miss it if it weren't there, I prolly would. Don't much care about the other mags which I have invariably read at just about any other lounge anywhere in the world.
Haven't flown SIN-KUL in a while now. Most memorable time was on a 343 in the mid-90s.Le jour de Saint Eugène, en traversant la Calle Mayor...

I particularly liked the travel articles in Silver Kris magazine and also those in Silk Winds too. Once a while I will take a copy that I liked. But I remembered reading somewhere that one or two airlines have stopped magazines onboard to reduce aircraft weight due to fuel prices.Originally posted by B727 View PostI love and collect the Silver Kris magazine. I read that the next climate conference will likely to see some sort of carbon dioxide emission taxes or levy on jet fuel bill be passed. This will likely to increase cost of operations and cost to be passed to consumers. It may be that the amount of newspaper and magazines carried will be reduced in some cases and that reduction in allowable luggage weight will be put in place.

I remain of the viewpoint that cutting back on magazines is a step too far.
So to answer your question; They have never* carried magazines in Y for KUL.
Even in C class, there are limited mags (not the same range you'd expect on other flights)
*meaning> not before, during or after the crisis.

But in the discussion about the loss of Kris Chilli Sauce, no one made a claim like 'it was a step too far' IIRC.Originally posted by Kyo View PostMany people consider various things dispensable, but once its gone, they want it back... Thank you, mec, for clarifying that up. Jubilee777, indeed the thread title should be changed - my suggestion for jjpb3 below.
LionCity - Yes, they have plenty of newspapers onboard, more than enough to go around. Is five magazines more going to make a huge difference? One would expect not, surely.
jjpb3 - According to mec, this has never been the case before, during or after the crisis. If indeed this is true, and I'm inclined to believe mec on this, then more than a few frequent SQ flyers also did not seem to be aware of this when I brought it up in a little SIN drinks session this past week, in fact, the reaction was mostly mild surprise, I'd say.
My suggestion for a thread re-title: SIN-KUL/PEN - Should SQ Make Magazines Available In Y?
In which case, for the time being, it'd be up to the cabin crew's discretion whether they would be nice enough to fetch a magazine from the J cabin. Probably only for PPS pax, if it even would be allowed.
In summary, being accustomed to having magazines available on all the other SQ routes (apart from KUL/PEN), it *would* have been 'a step too far' in the wrong direction if they did have magazines on the flight in Y previously. Personally, I feel SQ could make available (whether by their own initiative or only upon specific request) magazines on these 'shuttle' flights simply to standardise their reading offerings across all routes - a proactive step in ensuring that SQ passengers with expectations of having magazines to read (hardly a high expectation, I'd say) on all flights throughout the network are consistently met. Not too much to ask, I feel, and I certainly hope they could consider this.
