  • Singapore Airlines to start flying to Myanmar in October

05 September 2012 - Singapore Airlines will launch daily services to Yangon on 28 October 2012 to cater to rapidly growing demand for travel to Myanmar. Together with regional subsidiary SilkAir, the SIA Group will serve Yangon with 16 weekly flights.

SilkAir currently operates 16 weekly flights to Yangon with single-aisle Airbus A320-family aircraft. SIA will take over seven of those flights with larger 323-seat Boeing 777-200 widebody aircraft, increasing weekly seat capacity by 55%.

“Demand has been growing strongly for both business and leisure travel to Myanmar, and Singapore Airlines looks forward to serving the country for the first time,” said SIA Executive Vice President Commercial, Mr Mak Swee Wah, who is also Chairman of SilkAir.

“SIA and SilkAir are constantly looking at new market opportunities and the launch of SIA services enables us to quickly meet the growing demand for travel to this increasingly popular destination.”

Yangon is the largest city in Myanmar and it once served as the country’s capital. Today it serves as Myanmar’s economic centre, in addition to being a popular tourist destination.

Erm... are they putting up this extra capacity for what "appears" to be strong forward premium class bookings, especially FROM RGN?

Any chance of an equipment change for BKK or MNL for that matter?

Presumably there may be many generals who want to holiday in SIN.

Sureeeee, but for that they'd need to send a 77W at least to satisfy the premium demands this route commands...

Wow I might actually start flying SQ again.

Although I am dreading how crowded what used to be a lovely quiet airport is going to become. As well as SQ, Qatar, Eva, Dragon, Korean, ANA, Condor (and probably several more I havn't heard of) are all starting flights to Yangon before the end of the year.

With all these extra flights I think we really will start to see tourists sleeping on the streets as the hotel expansion is not happening as quickly as the flight expansion.

Not a surprise. Haven't TG added capacity as well recently ?.

Like Lobster says, that nice little terminal needs expanding or it will not be fund going through with a few widebodies in there at the same time.

If I'm not wrong, a SQT founder has been recently in Myanmar, but he flew out quite soon 'cause communication with the world were "difficult"..... I'm still thinking who is this founder...

and another one lived a 2-hours nightmare thinking of having lost his passport while he was in Myanmar .... this one was me
There's only One way to fly.... SINGAPORE AIRLINES!
If SQ is too expensive, the other way to fly is Qatar Airways

                            Not just that. They've added a 4th daily TG309/310.
