    no one?
to make the question easier, as I guess the same applies for the normal drivers license, do you have to be a permanent resident or a US citizen to obtain a driver's license in the US?

I was neither when I obtained my driver's license back when I was in university.

Not sure whether the laws have changed, however.

Did you try the FL HSMV website? There is also a link to contact them for additional questions, and via Google you may find additional information/organizations to assist you as well. Please note that because driver's license issuance in the U.S. is handled by individual states, each state will have varying requirements as to what's needed to obtain a driver's license or learner's permit (as well as further restrictions to driving on a learner's permit).

I have a US drivers license abeit from California, and I don't have US citizen nor a Green Card.

Students were able to obtain it. In California you can get Drivers Licenses without Social Security Numbers now. You just have to go to the DMV (department of motor vehicles) and show your I-20 and passport and they will issue you one

thx for your help, and <i actually called them and you don't even need a visa. Visa waiver is fully sufficient to get a driver's license, you only need an address (in the US) there where they can send you all the stuff. So actually it takes only 4 hours to get a learner's permit, that's it.

So how does it work in the US? Do you have to take tests or do you just show up there like 'hey I'd like to have a driver's license'?

Laws have changed in some states, all in the name of the war against anti-terrorism. Michigan, for example, stopped issuing DLs to anyone who wasn't a US citizen or green card holder this January.

Like if you only want a learner's permit, which is a driver's license for 15-16years old people, you have to take one small quiz, which can be taken over the internet (20 multiple choice questions/15 have to be correct). Then you have to go to a DMV center, where you have to pay 19.99$, they take a picture, you take a 2 mins visual exam, in order to prove that you're not blind, and then they'll print your learner's permit.
When you have the learner's permit and someone over 21 confirms that you have been driven for at least 50 hours, you have to take one driving exam and then you get your E-class driver's license, which allows you to drive alone.
You are not, who you are, you are who you want to be.

Lol because you SO need a DL to perform a terrorist attack- in fact, every suicide bomber gets his American DL just before he goes into action

But doesn't this cause massive problems? Here in Germany you have to pay about €2000 for your license and the exams are quite hard!

Why would it? The learner's process is supposed to take care of many of the preliminaries. The process in the US is actually quite painless.

You haven't been in the US lately, have you?

Perhaps we should all think back again. Or perhaps we should brush up with our history knowledge. I think it's insensitive to say something about driver license and terrorist attack. It doesn't mean a costly way to get a DL would prevent of what had happened. And perhaps the expensive cost in getting a DL in Germany has other reasoning behind it?

                            Nope, haven't been there
I was just wondering because even with this massive number of houers that we have to do accompanied by a professional driving instructor some people still drive like absolute *****s!

Well, probably that is because of the necesarry driving instructor and because of all the paperwork (you've got to send your birth certificate+ a photo+ a certificate that you aren't blind+ a certificate that shows your ability to give first aid all the way to Berlin, they sit on it for 6 weeks and than send it back to the driving instructor).
Also you have to take a second (practical) exam that you can fail simply because of bad luck...

A number of nutter drivers will always find a way through the system.
