I've just chucked out a perfectly good C redemption booking on SQ11 LAX-SIN, seat 17A no less...

and topped-up an additional 10,000 BD miles + cash to instead fly UA ORD-PVG in F, connecting to SQ PVG-SIN in F...

Have I done the right thing???

If you wanted to leave from ORD and connect through PVG.... then of course, you've done the right thing. A LAX-SIN ticket's no good is it?

Well neither actually... Unlike the slew of business trips I've done in recent history, I'm out to burn some miles, and damn well have some fun burning them. So with a high nomadic factor, I'm actually indifferent to whether I fly via ORD or LAX. My cause of angst is really whether I made the right call to fly UA F + SQ F over SQ C all the way...

NH F would have been a no-brainer... Unfortunately the only options I had available for my preferred dates were these two.

On the other board, LASUA1k just flew the same routing in first on an award ticket two weeks ago. You can ask him how he liked it. He said he was the only person transiting PVG and didn't know he had to clear immigration. I think he told me he enjoyed the short SQ portion of the trip more than the UA portion, but that the UA portion wasn't bad.

If I recall correctly a few years back, my seatmate on a Air China flight from Beijing was saying that all transiting paxs had to clear immigration before returning back to the transit area to board their next flight.

That might be the little downside, but thank goodness Singaporean passports have 14days visa waiver for travel to China.

Milehighj, I think its a bit late to ask us this question since you have already gone ahead with it. All I can say is....let us know after the flight if you regretted the decision...

It depends on your circumstances but for me, I'd go for what you've booked. I've only flown UA twice ever (once in Y and once in J) so UA F would be a new experience to broaden my horizons.

Agree with jhm - I would go for UA F with SQ F via PVG.
Have never tried UA F long haul before and would be interested to try them out one day.

Have changed my final routing once again. In all, it's now:

SIN-LHR: SQ F
LHR-SFO: UA F
[BD redemption of 50k miles + cash]

SFO-NRT: UA F
NRT-SIN: SQ F
SIN-BOM: SQ F
[BD redemption of 40k miles + cash]

So an effective F RTW for 90k miles + cash (and a couple of change fees)! Totally looking forward to it since I've not had a chance to fly longhaul F in years. Will try to get in a TR since for once this isn't a work trip.

Believe me I've spent days testing all date and route options on the NH tool to try to build in LH F transatlantic and NH F transpacific - to build what would be the ultimate "Best of Star Alliance F" redemption...

Unfortunately the availability just wouldn't work out for my dates, but I can guarantee no more buyer's remorse now...
