Blimey! Birmingham getting a mention! The Food Hall at Selfridges is pretty cool I have to admit, but would never have thought it would feature in the "World's Best". Not even an SQ destination Might have to pop over and refresh my memory sometime,.....BHX Do anyone?!?

Gosh, nothing in North America ?

IMO, the food hall of any of the big department stores in Japan is pretty amazing - I could spend months eating in one without getting bored!

and last time i was in KeDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens), i thought the food was ok, the price was high and the service was average... I wouldn't call it one of the worlds best!

Been there. Good but one of the best chinese restaurants in the world? I highly doubt it. Nothing compared to what I get in HKG, SIN or Australia. I'd also say I've eaten better in Vienna.

And yes: it's good but quite expensive and the service is nothing outstanding. But the KaDeWe location is simply classic

I think the list was about the best food halls; the list of best Chinese restaurants are in this thread.

I think any food hall in any large well known department store in Japan are excellent and are one of the main attractions of the stores. Some even specialize in certain segments of the population.

There are also some famous supermarkets which are like food halls in North America. I don't know if SQLPP lived in YVR at the time, but Woodward's food halls in Vancouver were fantastic, until being bought by Canada Safeway!

One of my favourites(almost 20 years since I lived there ) was David Jones in Sydney (City).

Don't get me started here, just remember who is the second city.

KaDeWe is pretty good, was there in Jan, it is pricey though, we saw three Japanese people just going nuts they spent over 300 euros on their lunch! In a food hall!

GPO is pretty good, it is my favourite here, it even has private dining for those in the know

One that is specifically targeted to the older generations is Keio Department Store in Shinjuku.

Another would be Wako in Ginza which is probably the most expensive depato in Japan!

Most are famous for the food floors in the basements called "depatika" and they often have special regional food fairs in the exposition rooms on the top most floors. In a local version of Isetan where I live they have one whole floor devoted to sweets and another for fresh and prepared foods for take-away!
