I think that is the problem. They have changed some of the lyrics / dialogue to suit its new London location, but not all of them. There are lots of references to NYC still there.

Overall, if you enjoyed the Broadway show and / or the film, then the minor differences will be an irritation, rather than a major issue - that was my view anyway.

You're right. I thought they might get creative with a similar bohemian locale in London, but too many of the lyrics would have to be adapted.

Having seen it on Broadway, it is strange to hear the cast with Brit accents, but it was enjoyable all the same. The cast is very good, but somehow I found this new version a little darker than I remembered the original to be with more emphasis on the suffering of the characters - especially Angel. That could just have been my imagination though.

I've only seen Rent on Broadway (and the movie as well on an SQ flight ), and enjoyed it. It seemed pretty dark to me then, though.

That's another show worth seeing. I can't imagine they've changed the locale, though, have they?? You would imagine if they kept the NYC setting the cast would at least attempt American accents...

Interesting! Did they keep it in the East Village? I'm curious how the line "You can take the girl out of Hicksville, you can't take Hicksville out of her" works in London.

I went to see Rent this week with Denise VanOuten. I enjoyed it much more than the critics said I would.

(unless you didn't enjoy the movies, in which case forget it).

It's the most expensive musical ever staged in West End, costing ?25 million pounds. The set is fabulous, with tree branches on stage extending into the circle/box seat walls.
When you enter the theatre early the hobbits will be mixing with the crowd, catching fireflies with a net. The cast is good, especially the actors playing Boromir and Gollum. There's also Sarah Michelle Gellar playing Galadriel - her voice is wonderful.
One fun scene has the hideous orcs "searching" for the hobbits among the audience, eliciting screams from them.
Whew ! What a fantastic musical !

I've watched Wicked too, which is pretty good too.
