  • little boy flies A380 [SQ227 SIN-MEL 26 Nov 2009]

This is a belated TR of a trip made in late Nov, and I need to apologise for the very sparse pics cos attention mainly devoted to taking care of the little fella.

    Background
Wife and I haven’t taken a trip together since the birth of our girl in March. We had planned a weekend Perth getaway in July with our older 2-yr-old boy sans the new-born. But the H1N1 saga put paid to it (company had mandatory quarantine on return as part of BCP). Finally in Sep, we decided to take advantage of the Nov Hari Raya Haji long weekend for a trip to Melbourne with the older boy. We couldn’t afford a longer stay as my mother-in-law who cares for the newborn has very few days leave left – she works in very small set-up where the annual leave is a grand total of seven days.

About a month prior to the trip, wife and I bought a Toys R’Us A380 to acquaint the little fella with planes and flights. The father also downloaded a clip of the A380 test-flight to lend greater visualization to the boy. All these had the combined effect of the 2½-yr-old flying his A380 everywhere at a high-pitched shrieking sound which we assumed is A380’s famously quiet engines. We did discover one month is probably too long, as evident from the missing tail-wing [hidden nicely by the tail in this shot] and broken wing-tips – this must go down in history as the A380’s 1st crash, thankfully in play-realm rather than real.

We arrived at Changi Terminal 3 after leaving the 8 month old girl with my in-laws – sob sob, the baby’s 1st extended separation from mummy. After quick check-in at Business – courtesy of daddy’s * Gold – we headed to Passport Control. Ah, the little fella is too short for the good officer behind the counter to compare his passport pic with his face – but there’s always daddy to lend a lift.

We headed to SKL, as daddy usually did when he goes on his work-trips, but we discovered that Economy tickets even with *G cld only access SQ Gold Lounge, tucked away behind some corridor next to SKL [aside: I didn’t know this; had I just been had by the dragons?] Daddy and Mummy agreed SQ Gold Lounge was really a pale comparison to SKL – food and drink selections were really a fraction of SKL [sorry cant remember the selections and was trying to get some chow for the little one to take pics]

We headed towards the gate at abt 20:00pm, with boarding scheduled for 20:20pm. Daddy had anticipated queues for security screening could be long cos it’s a A380 and the flight appeared full on OLCI. We were able to clear security quickly but before long queues started forming and the holding area was increasingly crowded.

The boarding call was made soon enough, inviting premium class passengers, PPS, *G and passengers traveling with children to board 1st. As usual, hoardes of pple quickly formed up to crowd the counters even before the queues were open to them – I have never figured this out: why bother to queue when one is already assured a seat.

As our seats were on the upper deck, we boarded with C pax. Daddy had been on 2 previous A388s but I was totally wowed. Soon I was seated on my 75D – daddy said he tried his best to get us a window seat so I peer out of the window but simply couldn’t. Mummy commented seats were wider than she remembered of other plane types.

SQFlyerGirl jie jie’s trademark shot but I cant afford to pay royalties, i’m just a little boy.

Daddy told mummy that FAs in Y always appeared more stressed out that those in C, even when they don’t have to remember names and drinks. Mummy pointed out that this could probably be the FA to pax ratio is drastically out of proportion between Y and C, plus some of the pax in Y were probably thinking they were flying in F.

Push-back was 10 min behind schedule, but we were finally on the way. Mummy commented the engines were very quiet compared to the regular planes! I’m just wondering when its going to take off like in the video.

Soon the cabin shook as the plane rumbled – mummy pointed to the moving objects outside the window to tell me plane’s taking off. Daddy started fussing – asking me to drink water and offering me my favourite raisins, but I have no problem with my ears at all. I’m a big boy. I’m only wondering why sitting inside a plane taking off didn’t seem as exciting as looking at one taking off.

After hot-towels were offered – whoa, were they hot (the towels, that is =P) – FAs came around to offer me

Daddy told me its Ben 10 but I prefer Thomas, or Winnie or Tigger, or …

21:55 I got to have my dinner 1st before everybody else [side: children and other special dietary meals were served ahead of others, as typical of SQ] – fish fingers, bread roll, strawberries, ribena – yum yum

22:25: mummy’s dinner pick: wok fried perch fillet in ginger soya sauce, stewed vegetables and steamed rice:

daddy was too busy feeding me to take a pic of his dinner but it was chicken breast with rosemary jus, buttered vegetable and potato with onions.

Mummy let me watch G-Force for a while but there’s simply too much talking, and way too long – I want Thomas…..zzz

    Fri 27 Nov 2009, 05:10am (Australian time)
Daddy told me we were had made Australian landfall overnight and we were over Southern Australia at the moment. Daddy and mummy were delighted and relieved I had managed to sleep through my flight. My breakie – empty space at right was a pint of Meiji milk which Mummy asked the FA to warm up for me:

We landed at 06:50am, 10 mins ahead of schedule – daddy observed SQ has a habit of landing ahead of schedule even though taking off later. 9V-SKH finally resting after her long flight – thanks for the ride on my very 1st flight

    thanks for the read

Excuses, excuses... I thought you were one of those who board early so that they can magically shrink just enough and then load their 42" Tumi on the overhead storage space...

Wah! You're such a good boy to sleep through the journey.

Thanks for the TR. It's always interesting to see what the little ones eat. I eat lots of fish fingers too.

well, now i understand - we need to have a SQTalk Trip Reporter shoulder band, to let everyone knows that pax is on duty

but, er, what abt those 3 generations worth of families who chatter non-stop and jam up the queues and block access to the priority queue too? [scratch head]

oh wify and i were really relieved that this little one adapted to every aspect of the flight - pressure change on ears, eating dinner at that unearthly hour [for a 2 1/2 yr old] and sleep. In fact, think he slept better than wifey.

This was a most enjoyable TR! Kiddy meals get Ribena! Are normal pax allowed to order this too? Never crossed my mind to check!

yeah, some frens commented that son's kiddy meal looks better than adult meal, at least in Y. one fren - who always asked for maggi mee cos she finds regular airline grub puky - actually said she'll ask for kiddy meals in all flights in future
