  • Watch Your Throne SQ: NH F

Words cannot describe how blown away I was at the completion of my first every FC flight with NH yesterday. Until yesterday, I've always had SQ at the utmost top dog spot for onboard first class travel. But yesterday's trip with NH F NRT-CDG has me "pondering" towards dethroning SQ off that top spot. I fully understand yesterday was merely one experience and perhaps I should not be so quick to jump the gun. However yesterday's encounter certainly beats the best FC flight I've had with SQ by a slim margin. For me to say that takes a lot of serious impressive performance by a carrier to top SQ and NH did just that. The presentation of the meals yesterday were as equally as impressive as SQ's and quality even better. It wasn't a surprise the Japanese meals NH provided were superior, instead it was the western meals. Yes the western meals. It never crossed my mind that a Japanese carrier can cater such high quality western meals, but boy I was proven wrong. The Foie Gras was the best piece of duck dish I have ever had for an airplane meal. Easily beats the ones I've had on SQ, CX, JL and I was glad I decided to choose it at the last minute as I was almost about to choose another Japanese meal. The raspberry tart was also excellent. Interesting part was the caviar. On F with SQ, CX, LH I've always had the caviar placed together directly on the plate with the other stuff, but NH places it separately in a tiny jar which I didn't expect at all.

So yes the meals were very impressive, but really what made this flight a true gem of a lifetime were the crews. Never have I been served by the friendliest, most professional, attentive, efficient crews than the group that served our front cabin. Sure their English skills can be brushed a little bit and nowhere close to the levels that the SQ crews posses. But most of what they spoke were understandable. Anyways this was not a major issue at all. Nonetheless I was taken away on how the crew treated me. It seems everytime I blinked the other way after staring out the window, there is a crew kneeling besides me asking me what I wanted and if I was eating something, they would ask me if I enjoyed it and if not they were more than happy to give me something else that was available (not that things had to come down to this as in the previous paragraph, I stated how satisfied I was with the catering). And these people were damm good at their work as well. The way they anticipated everyone's needs, the way they organized things during the meals and I could go on and one were nothing short of brilliance.

The only thing that NH didn't beat SQ in F is the seat. While I had no problems napping on them, they were not as comfortable nor cozy as the SQ seat - both in upright position and in lay down position. And really the area of seating is the only reason I haven't fully dethroned SQ off that top spot.

Does this mean I'll be avoiding SQ every chance ANA is flying a similar route as an alternative? No. But hey if SQ is unavailable for unattractive schedule, pricing or availability, I sure won't hesitate to consider NH as an alternative. Oh how time is killing me in anticipation for the return flight later this week.

And soon they even have luxury helicopter rides into Tokyo for you once you get off at NRT...

Glad you enjoyed! Awesome how they always seem to anticipate your next move. Pop out of the restroom tired and look, your bed is made!

NH is a great carrier and the service onboard is always of highest levels. That is true for both F and J.

Japanese have a great service attitude and they are very polite when dealing with each other. This politeness is sometimes regarded as cold as it is more distant and formal.

Having lived in Japan for two years, I speak some Japanese - and that is usually the ice-breaker for fantastic service.

I just returned from New York in J - they serve a fix lunch to everyone after take-off (both flights from Tokyo and New York leave around noon) and after that everyone can order of a menu whenever and whatever. No more 2.5 hours mandatory breakfast-service to wake-up everyone. Once you wake up, you pick any item from the menu (I had Eggs Benedict) and you will get it up to 30 minutes before arrival. SQ can certainly learn from that concept - they don't even do that in F...

Food on NH always has been of highest quality and is beating SQ in both F and J. Try the steak out of NRT - hightest quality and best preparation in the air - again in both F and J.

Unfortunately, NH is flying to SIN only with the 2-class Regional configuration. I find the international J seat to be very comfy (alike to the Spacebed) and the international F seat is just fantastic (although the greyish colour-scheme could be improved...).

Yes, it is a real pity about NH's regional configs... then again, when not paying Biz or redeeming standard awards, it's down to regional seat choice and service and in that regard, I also find not much difference... of course, there's the option to take SQ's 333 into NGO now, which is fantastic if you're going to Nagoya, but not too great if you're going to NRT or KIX.

In J, that leaves the Spacebeds on the 774 (SQ12) which are now blocked for *A redemption leaving KF-only redemptions vs NH old J (I think the seat quality is very similar to that of the older 772/ERs in SQ)... for me, neither is too appealing but both are better than SQ Y on the 77W. Both are not great, and as much as I like NH, their J is not the most comfortable on the 763s..

This leaves service and food - both are very good, and given the right crew, it can swing in either direction. Having tried NH J's Jap selection (but before their venture with L'Oasis), it's better than SQ's Jap selection - but of course. But its up to individual preference... maybe if a pax prefers Southeast-Asian style cuisine, no competition by NH there... SQ wins hands down. Thus, it boils down to service... and I have very fond memories of all my flights on NH's J (and even their Y). At the moment, SQ's J has been a bit hit-or-miss for me, so I'd give NH the benefit of the doubt.

Thus, Kyo has taken to temporarily going elsewhere for holidays... which ain't a bad idea since the Yen is skyrocketing at the moment :/

And no, UA F is not an option.

Sounds exactly like my experience, also on a European flight (to FRA). Except in my case, I also got an extra 5 hours onboard due to a passenger illness causing return to NRT! I ended up writing one of my "20,000 words" TR from that set of flights.

NH F is clearly right up there with the very best. There is just something about the crew that really makes you feel comfortable, and their warmth/attentiveness feels genuine rather than a feeling of duty.

In my flights so far, SQ-NH-LX have been the "holy trinity" of F experiences... each having a subtly different style but all beyond reproach.

Don't forget that Japanese carrier like JL & NH will have to collect your pajama back towards the end of the flight but for SQ F you can keep it....!

As far as I knew, QF A380 J is giving away the whole set of pajama to all J passengers...any other airlines still offer pajama if you are in J...?

Seriously now, what is it with the obsession with taking away PJs?????????

If you're flying NH F, presumably you can also afford PJs that are far higher quality than what they give you onboard... yet I've seen this topic brought up time and time again on TOF as a negative for NH F. And the fact that NH PJs are not "branded" like Givenchy etc - if people really think that the "Givenchy" label is anything more than just the label, they really have no clue.

(Disclaimer: I did ask whether I could keep it and they said yes - I liked them because of the slightly coarse texture that was perfect for summer. But I was also fully expecting them to say no, and it would have not made the slightest bit of difference on my opinion of NH F if they refused.)

Any QF longhaul J - not just A380.

                  Yes, e.g. VS.

I guess possibly the same sort of reasons you wanted to keep yours!

My point was that, yes I asked to keep mine but it wsas entirely incidental to the overall experience. It really wouldn't have made any difference to my opinion of NH F even if they refused. On the other hand, I've seen way too many posts on FT that talks about NH taking back the pyjamas as some sort of a huge minus for the NH F product, which is what I was disagreeing with.

It seemed that people were willing to base their decision to fly NH F vs. others on whether you could take the pyjamas away or not, which is utterly puzzling to me - in my mind, such a small thing doesn't even register in my mind as a consideration for choosing a product worth $10k+.

Providing and taking back pyjamas may be a cultural thing ? Similar to hotels in western countries providing a bathrobe (and expecting that guests don't take it away), Japanese hotels provide yukata and (in some hotels I'm told but I can't recall noticing) pyjamas as well.

                          The B Team

I've heard from NH Diamonds that occasionally you will get the B Team/Crew. While they are still outpace most other A Teams on the other carriers, nonetheless, you realize it.

Had my first experience. While they didn't REALLY miss a step, the CP (a young, recent promotion) had difficulty keeping up with a half full cabin. Nobody had drinks for quite a while. Zero on the interaction I normally have, but nothing that I got upset about. Just different. Anticipations were not ALL realized. Bathroom door was never opened for me.

Again, these are EXTREMELY minor, but if you frequent NH, you do notice them.

Perhaps this is the service that KeithMEL experienced...which would help me understand his aversion.

Let me be clear: the service has not been "downgraded" one bit. Sometimes you simply get a newer crew.

Anyone even thinking that UA can be uttered in the same sentence needs to have his head examined.
