  • Changi’s decision to close budget terminal could backfire as need for 3rd runway grow

Singapore Changi Airport has taken the unusual decision to demolish its relatively new low-cost carrier terminal and build a larger hybrid terminal in its place. The closure of Changi’s Budget Terminal in Sep-2012 will result in the airport’s total handling capability shrinking by 10% during what could prove to be a challenging four-year period before the new hybrid Terminal 4 opens. Singapore also faces a pressing need to decide on the opening of Changi’s third runway, which is now only available to military aircraft, if it wants to stay ahead of the growth curve. Growing LCC operations have seen aircraft movements grow higher than passenger numbers.

Government just announced in Parliament today steering committee to look at development of T5 and civilian use of third runway. Recommendations within a year.

This is surely an airspace / handling rather than a capacity problem? Plenty of two runway airports coping with more traffic then Changi.

A well researched and written report. Saw a similiar report for SQ's operations in the US.

Now, if only someone can email this report to the Changi 2036 Steering Committee. Singapore taxpayers can save a multi-million dollar fee

That was one heck of a waffle. Author clearly overlooked the fact that aircraft carry belly cargo as well.

This is ok. Is for people who can understand it, now all people are native English only anyway.
Mostly video anyway. Just a reference of how they planned and looking for public input for the new design.
