  • Suggestion: Young Flyer Folder

We just had a secondary 3 (year 3 high school) student joining the board.

Perhaps mod should consider opening a folder for these young members/students??

to add what exactly?? how to access mario cart on the avod system? sorry, i don't see the point... it's not like we're posting pornographic material. if they joined the forum, they probably have a decent understanding of SQ and can contribute meaningfully. no need to spoon-feed or baby-talk to any members. it is insulting their intelligence.

good point there, but i am one sec 3 student here too...but maybe we should gather more young kids, student who have aviation interest to join SQtalk and share the knowledge among other SQtalkers...

it's up to admin choice...open another folder for kids or not...

looks like you are not giving a chance to student like us to join SQtalk and share the interest/knowledge between each others!

i might be wrong, i might mistaken what you have said...
if it's me getting the wrong idea, sorry.

I don't think that an age limit should be enforced but maybe a "Newbie" folder where newbies can post.
Newbies are not allowed to post new threads till they hit an X number of posts within the newbie folder.

Thing is, Sec 3 students aren't kids. I know several people in that age group who would hold their own with "older" people on this board. Rather than remind people that they are young, they usually prefer to project that they are more mature than their age suggests...

Sharing knowledge is totally fine...multiple threads with simple questions that can easily be searched for, is not [add: in my book]. I respect this board and its members very highly -- which is why I spent MONTHS reading a majority of the posts before I ever joined and posted my first question; and even then, I tacked it on to the most relevant thread I could find rather than muddying up the place. My thought is, if you have time to post over and over, there's plenty of time to read and gain some valuable knowledge. You might even find some great info you never would have thought of...

NOTE: this was a simple nice response to the comments above...where I agreed with SuperJonJon's idea. Upon reading through the SHEAR VOLUME of minutia that has been posted just in the last few hours, however, I have had to return to edit this post and retract that statement.

[/RANT OFF...for a while as I've said what needed to be said...]

Just some thought. While this might fend off trolling on the flip side wouldn't that deny a genuine case where that someone really needs a new thread to ask a question that's never been asked before or has a unique question but can't.

Somewhere on another internet forum that I admin, we specifically use a Newbie Lounge - for people to find their way, and get used to things, here's how we describe it:

                        "Newbie Lounge (9 Viewing)
Flame-free zone for people who are new to hardware and overclocking. No question too stupid, nothing taken for granted. Please read back in the forum and see if your question was already asked (and answered) recently."

Do note, it is not mandatory - and if a new member doesn't know his/her way around, they can ask in this specific forum. They are politely pointed which way to go if they ask questions that have previously been asked, without getting embarassed/flamed.

I don't know if we have enough 'demand' / volume of posts for such a forum.

I fully agree, age should not be a discriminatory fact.

I hate it when I was picked on during university just because I was the youngest.

there is a disturbing underlying assumption here by some people that younger members of the board should be segregated from the main body because well, they're young and probably don't know anything useful about SQ or lounges or for that matter even flying first or business class.

sorry if i've misread this, but i think that's just downright snobbish. yes its true many young people are many years off from sitting in the front of the plane (unless they have wealthy parents in which case i envy you) but the fact is that i feel everyone is entitled to their own pov regardless of age. if they have something to say let them say it. this being said i myself am also rather new, but still. and i also realise we probably have a lot of well to do members on this board (how else would you all be flying first and business class week in week out?) but at the same time not everyone is so blessed or lucky. sometimes people just want to find out what the good life is like, you know? and why should anyone say no to that?
