As a wild guess I'd suggest a shop that sells prepaid SIM cards. Probably one in San Francisco would be your best bet. Best of luck in the quest and let us know how you get on - this will probably be a "first" for all of us.

I use the AT&T Wireless prepaid sim for short stays - $2 a day unlimited talk and texts (texts to 100 countries that include Singapore and HK). Add on a data package valid for 30 days.
* $5 for 10 MB
* $15 for 100 MB
* $25 for 500 MB

Buy at any AT&T store. Resellers like Radio Shack won't sell you the sim, only the top ups.
