Yes indeed. Maybe it is due to check before returning to lessor or new owner. SQ has a habit of storing their fleet and flying them back to SIN for heavy check before sending them to desert.

Looks like both SRQ and SRP have found a new home or being leased out. SIA actually do not fly their stored planes back to SIN for maintenance or heavy checks unless they are restored to flying as otherwise they just be sitting in the desert and there's no point in any heavy checks before being stored.

              • SIA have announced that it will also retire 4 77Ws although no specific aircraft registration have been given. These planes have recently have a cabin refit with 4 first class seating and improved faster wifi. The 4 planes are likely the older ones which are approaching 15 years of age.

They must have done something really extensive to SWB following that fire to opt to skip it from being considered as the 'four oldest' due for retirement.

Yes that's what I was thinking. Sounds like the repairs weren't all covered by insurance!

It was estimated the repair cost is about USD70-100million upwards, SQ would most probably want to squeeze out more hours. A GE90-115B engine cost about USD24-27 million, wing approximately USD50 million and other structural fix. We won't know how much the final bill was but I do think insurance did cover at least a bit.

                        • Maybe the work has made the aircraft heavier so less desirable?

More likely: They invested that money into an asset and it hasn’t fully deprecated yet.

                          • SWB was delivered in 2006 and is 14.5 years and should have been fully depreciated.
However its likely that it was on ground for sometime for extensive repairs that it still have quite a bit of useful hours before the next major overhaul which is probably why its not retired yet. Some of remaining 77Ws will be flying until 2024 when the new 779s arrives, and SWB would be retired then.

But it has had money spent on it since delivery. A lot of was spent during the repairs to the wing. As a result it won't depreciate at the same time as the others.
