  • Shangri-La hotel, Kuala Lumpur- a review

My family and I recently had a very enjoyable stay at the Shangri-La in KL- many of you may know that they recently had a nice renovation- the guestrooms had a complete refurb, including the corridors. Particularly, the standard rooms (which didnt see much refurb the last round) has completely changed. The new cream and dark gold colour scheme is wonderful.

The Horizon club floors used to have a lighter, more contemporary feel. It now follows the same colour scheme as the normal floors, with slight decor changes as far as I can see.

Upon arrival, we were greeted- but made our on way to the Horizon club- it's only on the 1st floor anyway! We were greeted graciously and offered drinks while they handled the 'formalities' (all they need is your credit card and signature- very easy!)

Our club suite on the 15th floor has the same layout as the older suites- only they now have a more 'posh' feel. The dark wood may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I sure liked it. You not only have your usual bathroom and rainshower- but a nice big LCD TV in the bathroom as well- perfect! Horizon floors feature nice, 'bigger' L'occitane toiletries, and your usual stock of Shangri-La stuff (from the toothbrush to emery board). Of course, the sitting room and bedroom each had an even bigger LCD tv. It goes without saying that there is a sinful amount of soft towels.

As soon as we managed to drag ourselves out of the room, we went to the Horizon club lounge. (Of particular note, you never have to wait long for an elevator here. They're real quick!)
The lounge is far larger than their old venue- and the service & offerings, much improved. For dinner drinks, the club has its own bartender, and at least 2 types of Reds, whites and your usual assortments of liquor (no champagne though)

They also very kindly made us mocktails, and encouraged us to try everything on offer. They have a rotating menu of bite sized morsels and sandwiches - perfect if you have a late night dinner.

The club lounge also offers meeting rooms which are secluded in a separate section. All staff members were courteous, friendly and welcoming. There were no blank stares if you asked for a second glass of wine (in fact, they came around offering more!), they cleared old plates promptly and frequently addressed us by name. In fact, they even pushed our floor number for us at the lift- ah, I could live with this!

The Horizon club manager is wonderful herself- going from table to table, chatting with guests (who want to chat, of course) and never intrusive. We also requested to view a Premier selection suite and was promptly escorted up. I have to say, these suites are nice one-bedrooms. The walk in closet is HUGE- (the size of a hotel bathroom)- some background. These new suites are on the top few floors (previously the Horizon floors before refurb

back to our club suite- we soon fell asleep after turndown(whether its alcohol or the bed, I don't know) and found that it was very hard to get up the next morning! I was being a busybody and checked that it was a Simmons, custom made for Shangri-La. coupled with their down/feather stuff, it was certainly one of the best I have slept on.

Breakfast is a very sane affair at the lounge. While the spread may be small, it was the usual Shangri-La quality- organic alpine yogurt, dim sum, huge variety of bread and French butter- although the Japanese spread is diminished from the old times. Juices (as with all other times) are served in heavy crystal glasses, and if you fancy egg dishes like Eggs Benedict, they graciously created them for us (even though they weren't on the menu). And when they arrived, they're well presented and not like they were doing it for the sake of doing.

Afternoon tea is a similar affair with beautiful (and delicious) sandwiches, Malay Kuih and scones. After our second visit, the lounge people remembered our seating and drink preferences- they must have a good mind or good record system

They were also very generous with their late check out, and even invited us in for drinks after that!

I highly recommend the new Shangri-La. Although, the rates are now higher, but hey, it's good!

You can, however those picture are links, and links by newbies need to go through a moderation stack to vet through so that it isn't a dubious spam link - which in your case, surely isn't. Go right ahead and post those pics
