  • SQ & Feng Shui

Talking to someone from the company today and he commented that SQ has relatively poor luck with Airbus, could be a Feng Shui incompatibility.
    His observations:
A340-300 : Perfomance deviation, they have the shortest lifespan in SQ history.
They exist as fast as they enter service.

A340-500 : The only available product available then for them to take a chance on ULR,which caused huge losses and had to cut the route. Rumoured to have incurred a huge loss for the disposal of these birds.

A380-800 : Delivery delay leading to a huge bird with high operating cost struggling against the more efficient B77W,it was a fleet type that was never profitable since it entered operations.

A350-900 : Biggest order of AB for SQ and after 70% of deliveries, the Coronavirus stuck, resulting in the most critical crisis in the company’s history and fighting for financial survival.

Interesting observation,no offence to any Airbus or Boeing fans please!

Someone once said this about feng shui:

"a mere chaos of childish absurdities and refined mysticism, cemented together, by sophistic reasonings, into a system, which is in reality a ridiculous caricature of science."

    I'm even more convinced now.

Since we are on this, just for the fun of it.

The Boeing 737 is a cursed aircraft for SilkAir. MI 185 737 crash, Max groundings.

SQ should have stuck to AB NBs and Boeing WBs.

Only the 333 and 310 worked out pretty well for them.

While we are at it, only the Boeings had major accidents/incidents in the SQ group. MI185 B733, SQ006 B744 and the latest was the engine fire on the B77W from MXP. Hmm, SQ is not so lucky with Boeings as well

The SQ117 hijacking was on an A310. That has to be inauspicious.

Wasn’t there supposedly an A310 that “lost control” over the Bay of Bengal in the 1990s?

In terms of the A340-300 being the fleet with the shortest lifespan in SQ history, I thought that honour should be with the A300B4 or even the 757, or did those fleet types remain longer than the A340-300s?

All these about Airbus is "nonsense" as these are all conincidences and the decision of the management to buy them. As said, even Boeing 757s had a shorter service life with SQ than the A340s. The only real "taboo" is the number 13 and in all SQ and Silkair and even Scoot aircrafts there's no seat number 13 row.

You forgot the B777-212ER which burnt out 9V-SQK. Total loss. Speaking of which, what happened to it?

Yes, the hounour should go to A300B4. The first A300B4 was delivered in Dec 1980 and last retired in May 1985. 5 years of service.

B757 first delivered in Nov 1984 and last retired June 1990. 6 years.

A310 first delivered in Nov 1984 (same time as B757) and last retired in Sept 2005. That's 21 years of continuous service. SQ took both types to test run which performed better, in the end they picked A310.

The first A343 was delivered in 1996 and last in 2003. The last two 9V-SJP and 9V-SJQ were even not painted in SQ livery, and were sent straight to Boeing. But that's 7 years of A343 operation which helped SQ to open up many long thin route, I won't say it is bad omen though.

As for the A345, it was SQ the one pushing Airbus for the specific type when Boeing was busy pushing more B77W sales. Its nearest competitor didn't exist until 2006. So can't blame Airbus on this one.

For A380, if they are not profitable, SQ won't have place second order to replace the first 5 leased birds. They would have draw down the fleet when B77W entered service or they could have gotten more B77W.

For A350, who would know coronavirus is on the horizon when the order was placed in 2006? That's 14 years ago.

It was last parked close to the engine run up bays. Former 9V-SMT B744 came close to disaster in NZ. I also heard of a B747 in the 80s that lost almost all engines over Indonesia due to volcanic ash.

Back to topic, anyone knows how long the DC10s were with SQ ? The concorde, technically not registered under Singapore registered, but flew with SQ also had a relatively short lived time with SQ as escalating oil prices and neighbouring countries disallowing supersonic travel doomed it.

Only for five years (1978-1983). The DC-10s were used to launch the first SIA passenger service to the USA in 1979 (LAX), but those routes later shifted to the 747-200.

SQK was written off...frame still somewhere at Changi.

On that note, might as well say all the Kilos are jinxed.

The only two write offs in SQ’s history are SPK and SQK.
Alphabetical order too... P ... Q... fortunately SRK retired safely and there’s no SSK, SUK. The next Kilo in line is SWK 😂

The last two DC-10 (9V-SDF & 9V-SDG) also didn't saw service with SQ, both were shipped to Varig upon delivery.
