A380 - Master Thread

  • We didn't book those flights because there wasn't any saver availability for those flights. It's hard enough trying to lock in saver award long-haul flights on A380s letter-lone in the new suites. It will just be an extra bonus if we end up in the new suites.

      SQ usually release 1 or even zero saver “new suite” award. That the main problem. They would release as advantage award instead. And saver usually on waitlist or blank out.

        Exactly.
        That's why I was hoping to maybe get lucky and have the new suites on these flights even though they were booked when the seat map still showed the older suites.

        • Yes its almost impossible to get a saver for the new suites, if at all especially in advance.This has likelyl more to do with the fact that there are only 6 new suites available on the ver 3 plane. There seems to be much better chance and even confirm old suites that are available as there are 12 such suites in the ver1 and 2 A380s.

            Exactly. So does anyone have any additional info on which flights are getting the new refits and also, how many are currently being refitted?

                • Do we have any intel on when SKT will be in the air again after the refit. If my memory doesn't fail me SKS took 8 months to refit and SKT has been close to 7.5 months out of action, so we should see her in an air test soon?

                    Guess it might come out in Oct or early nov. acting as a spare aircraft for around 2 months to facilitate some maintainance work for SKU-SKZ before being deploy to NRT. These 5 aircraft have been flying non stop except for few days down time due to urgent maintainance.

                    • Having a A380 grounded for 7-8 months is a very long time if its just for refitting. It costs a few million a week for a A380 to be grounded hence just imagine the high costs of having the A380 grounded for 7-8 months.

                      • For the winter schedule, AKL/Delhi/Melbourne will be using the version 1 A380 while Sydney (SQ222/231) /Beijing/Tokyo/London (SQ308) will be using the version 2 A380.

                        So they need all 6 version 1 to be in service. SKJ should be back by early october.
                        For version 2 they should be able to send one plane for refit if SKT is back.

                            The only way more ver3 A380s will go into rotation is through the refit program. The refit program has pretty much ground to a halt. One plane (SKS) has been refitted and SKT hasn't been in the air since January. When SKS returned to service, we expected to see another A380 from the ver2 pool go into take its place in the refit program but this hasn't happened.

                            So, with only one A380 currently undergoing a refit that has so far taken 7.5 months and still going, and the rest of the A380 fleet stretched to the limit barely able to cover scheduled flights, the outlook is pretty grim if you're hoping for an upgrade. Sorry...

                            • By the way, assuming the refit takes 8 months each for the remaining 12 v1/v2 A380s, it would take 96 months of work before the entire fleet is refitted. With the fleet already being stretched so thin, I doubt the entire fleet would be refitted. Maybe they won’t bother once the 777-9s arrive.

                              • Yes perhaps SQ should just retrofit 4 of the older A380s to ver 3 and hence it be half of the fleet be ver 2 and ver 3, as its taking too long of between 6 - 8 months just to retrofit one A380 and if SQ continue to retrofit all the older A380s to ver 3, it will be at least another almost 3 years. Or perhaps as an alternative is to just redo and reduce the 12 suites in the older A380s to just 6 of the new suites on the main deck.
