    Thanks jhm.

Very spacious. Do post more pics of the hotel if you have them. Any room to share for one more

Thanks for sharing. Does look nice although the living room area looks a bit small and the desk area right in front of the TV not well designed IMO (well at least for those of us who like to watch TV whilst working).

        I just checked-in this afternoon.

The hotel is still in the soft opening phase - it started accepting guests less than a week ago and this shows. The taxi I took from the airport had no idea what or where the hotel is and had to phone up to ask.

I checked-in in the hotel lobby where there are several desks with chairs in front of them. My impression was of lots of staff milling around aimlessly and the irritating experience of having every person I walked past greeting me (probably because they have nothing else to do!). Even the check-in process seemed a bit awkward, e.g. I had to stretch across the desk to reach the keypad to enter my PIN. Breakfast isn't included and there was no mention of any lounge with free drinks. 24 hrs of Internet access costs S$32.

I was offered a choice of SPG PLT amenities being extra points, a Bloody Mary made with chilli padi and a St. Regis CD.

I was escorted up to the room (a corner executive suite) by the check-in girl and met at the elevator by a senior butler. He then proceeded to diligently explain everthing in the suite to me including the fiendishly complicated remote system for the Bose sound system and plasma TV (e.g. press this, then press that etc) and even started to explain how to use the standard room safe (with instructions printed on the front) before I stopped him! Free pressing of clothes and the usual butler services, e.g. unpacking etc.

The toiletries are by Remede - a US company I've not heard of before.

IMO, the St. Regis doesn't compare to somewhere like the Shangri-La Valley Wing with free champagne, afternoon tea, canapes, breakfast etc and polished and slick service but of course (i) the S-L VW costs more (at least what I paid for it last year); and (ii) it's still very early days for the St. Regis. The St. Regis also has to compete with the likes of the MO who offer for less per night rooms with club lounge access and 10pm check-out as standard.

Would I stay at the St. Regis if I didn't have the chance of a SPG PLT upgrade and/or SPG stay credit ? Probably not is my opinion so far.

My 2nd stay - what seems to be a normal room this time on the 5th floor (the last time was the 8th floor).

The same procedure as before of checking in in the lobby and then being escorted up to the floor by the check-in staff to be handed over to the butler (who would then show you around the room, offer to unpack/press clothes or, in my case, bring a pot of tea and biscuits).

Like last time, there was a personalised invitation for a wine tasting during the early evening in the Decanter wine bar - "We sincerely welcome you to be the privileged few to savour the finest selection of rare vintages, presented by our Chief Sommelier, Mr. Derrick Lim." - but again, I won't be around for this so no idea how much there would be to drink... No welcome letter from the GM this time.

I was told that the grand opening will be in March so there's still a few months to iron out the problems, e.g. the TV in the bathroom which (unlike last time) was turned on and working but couldn't be turned off so a member of the engineering staff had to come up to pull a wire out from under the TV in the bedroom!

Indeed. Having experienced them first hand yesterday I must say this, while meaning well, has the potential to get very annoying. All of us yesterday commented on it. sailaway75 had about three people escort him to the toilet and Ceri was 'welcomed back' by three different staff members when she returned. We were wished Happy New Year by about 8 staff when we were leaving !!

They didn't say anything about an upgrade at check-in and I didn't ask. Not that I minded terribly at well past 1am in the morning by the time I was finally left alone!

How was the food and service in the restaurant ? I had dinner at the poolside restaurant the other night (half out of curiousity and half because I was tied to my Blackberry/laptop that evening) and it was a dismal experience.

Despite being the only customer, the food was overcooked (e.g. tough and dry kebabs) and/or the particular combination just didn't work (e.g. what had the taste and texture of an orange lollipop on top of pastry). Two of my courses arrived at the same time so one became cold whilst I ate the other. The lights kept being dimmed and then brightened throughout the time I was there! Other staff kept walking in and out of the restaurant.

The only good point was that the staff were extremely friendly and chatty (but currently inept), e.g. wanting to know my dessert order at the beginning of the meal; asking whether I wanted milk with my espresso ; and the mulitiple enquiries whether I was enjoying my meal (even to the extent of somebody collaring me as I left for some comments - I was too kind to say anything...).

Wish me luck for breakfast now!

Yeah, Remede has been pretty standardized (at least across the US properties). It's really not bad stuff...although the big round disk soap in the shower is ridiculously large.

So jhm, what's the best hotel now in Singapore? Would you disagree with most on TOF that the Ritz Carlton still holds that honor? Just curious.

Curious to know if the tv was positioned in front of the tub (as I always think it should be) or off to the side where you have to crane your neck...

They have a round disk soap and moisturising lotion at each of the two sinks; but inside the shower, there are only 70ml sticks of shower gel, shampoo and conditioner - no soap. I quite like the shower gel with its exfoliating beads - new for me at least!

I haven't stayed at the RC nor at other places like the FS, Raffles etc so I can't really say.

It's directly in front of the tub (but off centre if you want to watch it whilst sat somewhere else in the bathroom. ).

Thank you Guy Betsy! I was biting my tongue wondering when someone would come out and say it! It's a bit too er........ ornate for my taste.

I like more the zen look of Hyatt hotels.

Then again it all comes down to personal taste I guess

Ornate is one thing. But its downright ugly. I mean, look at the carpet. No, on second hand, don't look at the carpet if you don't want an epileptic fit!

And why does everything clash with each other? The colours, the 'vinyl' looking chair that isn't colour coordinated with the table for instance.

I mean, if you want to do it ornate, then do it with sytle and not try to cut corners by mismatching furniture. Everything looks thrown together. The bathroom is nice - on its own. But once you put it into perspective with the rest of the suite, it sort sticks out like a sore thumb.

Look at the grand European hotels. They are ornate but yet they scream 'style'. Ok so Singapore wants it grand too. But couldn't they have even picked up a copy of "House and Garden" and chosen some interior furnishings better.

I am seriously thinking of NOT staying at this hotel now that I have seen what awful interiors they have!

after staying there a couple days ago, i inquired about a 3-month stay, and the AD of sales got back to me, quoting $375SGD/night except for the period from sept 24-29, for which they quoted me $2800SGD/night. they also extended 20% off on laundry and dry cleaning.
