  • Kata Beach, Phuket - what can I expect?

    Hi

My wife and I have gotten some cheap tickets to Thailand in November and we have decided to go to Phuket. We went there many years ago (as you can see from this early trip report http://gardkarlsen.com/thailand.htm ) but after that we have only checked out other places in Thailand. This time we have decided to stay at a place called Avista (http://www.avistaphuket.com/) located between Kata and Karon beach. We got it pretty cheap but I guess it can backfire as the place is due to open on November 1st and we are going there in mid-November ;-) - I hope that they are done with all the construction when we arrive there. I was also a bit surprised to see that the hotel offered the room for about 5000 Baht but when I check Agoda I could get the same room for 3000 Baht. So I sent an e-mail to the hotel that I would like to book directly if they could give me similar prices to Agoda. But they just sent me an e-mail back with the official price list with original prices so I just booked with Agoda and got the room for 3000 Baht including breakfast and taxes ;-)

But back to my question: what can I expect from Kata beach? Is it easy to get to the other beaches? How much is a taxi to Patong beach? Any good restaurants in Kata beach? The weather should be fairly decent in November right? Is the hotel location a good location? Any info is appriciated :-)
    Regards
    Gard

Hi gardkarlsen, I haven't stayed at Kata beach, but have stayed at both Patong and Karon; when we stayed at Karon it was pretty deserted (we were at what was then the Crowne Plaza) with very little to do apart from enjoy the hotel facilities.

If I remember correctly, we aksed the hotel to get us a TukTuk (seemed to be only sparsely available) and travelled to Patong for the afternoon/evening for shopping and to eat. The journey was pretty quick (again, IIRC, memory a little faded, perhaps about 15 minutes or so) and relatively cheap. Of course, always a matter of bargaining for the best price.

I suppose it all depends upon what you're after - the resort you've chosen looks great, and will no doubt be excellent for quiet R&R. Patong isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I would strongly recommend a visit to appreciate the hustle and bustle (and then return to chill out at your hotel!)

Hope this helps a little, I'm sure there are others with more up to date knowledge than me

It's no problem getting around from Kata to Karon, Patong etc. Unfortunately unless you are driving yourself you are stuck with the taxi/tuk-tuk mafia on Phuket who charge ridiculous money for short hops. OK, it's not a bank breaking amount by European (and especially Scanadavian..) standards, but they take liberties as you have little choice.

If you want to travel around in the day time, and/or you want to go out in the evening and not drink, then I would recommend hiring a car.

As for a good restaurants in Kata, they have an excellent one right in Kata that we have been to a few times:
