  • How to post articles without breaching SQT Terms of Service

How to quote articles and other bits of information which are others peoples original pieces of work, without breaching the SQT Terms of Service

Why do we have this restriction
The SQT Terms of Service restrict users from posting the whole of another persons original work. The reason for this is that even if you give credit to the original author it will still breach copyright laws unless you have the permission of the author to use his/hers work.

Posting a small part of a document.
Although copyright laws prohibit the posting of a full article without the authors permission. They do allow you to quote a small part of an article to support the piece or work you are creating. You must still credit the author and provide a link to the full article.

What are the rules for how much is allowable to quote
Unfortunately the laws do not specify the amount allowable, it is really up to the original author to decide that they are not happy with it and take legal action (which has happened to a number of websites).

For SQT the moderators have decided that the amount quotes should be the minimum possible to get an idea of what the article is about. As a rough guide we would not expect more than two paragraphs from an average news article to be quoted.
