  • EK/TZ Collision @ Changi

    From NinerVictor:

A collision between an Emirates A380 (A6-EUB) and a Scoot 787 (9V-OJA) occurred in the early hours of this morning. The A380 was on a standard pushback facing south from C23 and the 787 was turning left from NC when they came in contact.

The A380 was operating EK405 to Dubai, and the 787 was operating TZ188 to Tianjin.

OJE subsequently replaced OJA on the Tianjin flight, which departed with a 4.5-hour delay.

Today;s ST reported that the Emirates A380 was being back and Scoot was taxiing to the runway. It mentioned that the Emirates pilots were not in control during ush back and was unable to see any approaching aircraft as it was being ushed back. The scoot pilots were taxiing - but the pilots would be able to see the A380 ahead in front of them being pushed back and could have noticed it was getting too close for them. Looks like only the wingtip of the A380 was damaged but for the 787 it was quite a bit of damage.

Diagram explains some. Don't know much about airport ground traffic rules. Anyone can explain? Is it the tow truck driver's fault?

Pushback clearances is issued by Singapore Ground(ATC) to the pilots, who then relay it to the air tug driver or headset man. Likewise, Singapore Ground(ATC) also issues taxi instructions. It is to be noted that Scoot was taxiing on a parallel taxiway to the EK aircraft. But at the location of the incident, this two taxiways begin to merge. As of last morning, pushback instructions from the affected bay has been changed to prevent this from happening.
          The pertinent questions are:
          1. Why did Singapore Ground(ATC) issue a pushback clearance to the EK A380 knowing fully well that a Scoot 787 was/would be taxing close by ?
          2. Why didn't the Scoot 787 crew stop the aircraft when they saw the EK 380 close by ? The damage to the 787's wing was some distance in. In all fairness, it was dark and it could have been possible they didn't see it. The nav lights on the wings for increased visibility are angled towards the front.
          3. Did the air tug driver saw the 787 aircraft taxiing close by ? It would have come into his view at the last minute as it would have come into his view after it turned from North Cross. The huge fuselage of the A380 could also be blocking the back view.

I'm impressed by the level of detail and accuracy in the graphics.

As of this afternoon, Emirates A6-EUB is still parked at the cargo apron area. The tail is visible from the Terminal 1 Viewing Mall.

I know this was a while ago. But does anyone know how the Scoot plane was patched? How do you repair a plastic wing?
