    Wow! Thanks for posting!

    This TR's got everything.

    Food, aircraft, trains!!!

Some comments. I don't know how to multiquote...

    1. You are forgiven for leaving out pics of your lunch at Tsukiji. If I had a penny for everytime I ate first and....took pictures later

    2. OZ J class seat adjuster wins my vote for the most complicated looking controls

    3. I've only noticed the ground crew standing in a row waving the plane good bye in Japan. Very nice touch!

    4. Nozomi 500. It's on my to-do list now

Wow, I leave the TR a couple of days and come back to a long list of messages to answer - thank you

I echo HUGE AL's view that you need to be there really early. Missus & I were there about 6am on a cold winter's day and thankfully there was no queue that morning. When we left, there were a few waiting. But the experience of eating sushi that fresh was just memorable.
Yes, I know - crack of dawn would have been ideal for minimum waiting time. But I'm really not a morning person - it would have been pretty much impossible for me to get up that early! It could be a useful option if I ever arrived on a super-early morning flight I suppose.

I may, or may not stop in NRT the next time I go back home, but if I do, I will definitely do it again... despite the painful exchange rate!

Just curious, I thought 'O-toro' is the medium fatty tuna, and 'Toro' is the fattiest?
As others have kindly answered before me, O-toro is the fattiest. I actually don't really like normal maguro because it just tastes dull, but when it's O-toro or Chu-toro...

Well I need to leave an excuse to go back on Shinkansen next time!! Besides, although I try my best to emulate, I doubt too many people want to see my leg shots like they want to see SQFG's...

The Tsukiji shops aren't bad, but I've had a local friend take me to one of the restaurants in Ginza, and the meals there have never disappointed me - a 5-star rating each time!
Toro being too fat - is there such a thing? I think that it would definitely be too oily if it was a sashimi, but as a nigiri... no problem!

As for other restaurants being better - that may well be the case, but I'm assuming that they wouldn't cost the JPY 5000 I paid for their set menu plus an extra o-toro and uni!!

      1.
      2. It does look like your local university would have a course for it, wouldn't it? "B.Sc. (Hons), OZ C Seat Adjustment"
      3. I've seen it in Korea as well, I thought... It is indeed a very nice touch!
      4. Nozomi 500 - nice to look at, not as good for ride comfort! So my suggestion is take the 500 to Yokohama (or some other suitable middle point), and take the N700 rest of the way

This talk of o-toro reminds me of a small sushi bar in Japan (down an alley in Roppongi) I've been to about half a dozen times. I only go once or twice a year but they remember me! (Perhaps it's because I eat so much or look distinctive...)

I always just order omakase (mainly because I can't speak enough Japanese to order the really interesting stuff beyond the bog standard sushi/sashimi items) and have never been disappointed with the procession of small dishes which come out. The last time phaleesy and I went, we were given a piece of sushi each with a slice of o-toro on top which had been seared for a brief moment. It was very simple and delicious.

I'm looking forward to our transit next month in TYO when we have a whole day to eat before NH to LAX (more food!).

You may be talking about Aburi-Toro, one of my all time favorites.

I think you're right, StarG! I just Googled and found, e.g.

                  http://www.skilletdoux.com/2006/12/the_deliciousne.html

Aburi toro is, like any other toro, the extremely fatty cut of tuna taken from the belly of the fish. But in the case of aburi toro, it's then topped with a light dusting of some mystery powder that is both salty and sweet, quickly seared with a blowtorch, and topped with a bit of chive. It. Was. Amazing. The quick sear under incredible heat leaves the inner rawness while cooking the outer surface. But most importantly, it melts and draws out some of the fat, leaving the surface of the fish glistening with pure toro richness.
Now that I know the Japanese name (thanks!), I can ask for it specifically.

Great TR, stargold. I loved the comparison of the trains to bouncers with shades.

Somehow, I never really think of Tokyo as an all-nighter kind of city... Clearly, I haven't been shown around by the right people!

You should go - it's really an interesting place (although really too expensive at the moment )

You'll have to let me know where this place is - my Tokyo friend isn't a huge sushi fan, so she doesn't know the right places...

I just remembered, it's your NH F flight soon - I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! The catering ex-NRT is the best out of all the stations, naturally

You're not really hijacking the thread - after all, as long as it's food porn, train porn or flight porn, it's quite okay!

It's just one of those odd mental images that you get at that moment... glad someone else sees it the same way! No-one else that I've explained it to so far understood it... Glad you enjoyed it
