  • Low-cost Suites class...

Apologies if this has already been posted, or is in the wrong forum, but here's a review of Suites class... aka Norwegian Premium Economy.

Basically all the hardware, right down to the seat covers, is exactly the same as they were on SQ...

I'm very surprised SQ allowed this to happen. Massively reduces the exclusivity factor of the real version.

How can they stop it? It isn't their plane anymore. Besides is an old generation product they are removing.

SQ was required to return the plane in the same condition that it was delivered in, which is also why PEY was removed and replaced with the original Economy seats. SQ would have been in breach of the contract and there would be penalties otherwise.

Is it safe to say that this was set in stone as far back as 2006 when they first leased the plane and signed the contract - that they knew that when they decide to return them, their product will end up with another carrier?

If SQ agreed to new, unfavourable return terms after signing the original paperwork, you'd really be questioning their business acumen.

It was always planned from the beginning to return these at 10 years and replace them with new to my knowledge.

But in any event, the seats and suites in the HiFly A380 are already not the current new SIA's generation of seats, and hence believe SIA is not bothered by this as such. Even the EY seats are 2 generations old.

SQ has no title to the plane, seats nor the patent for the right to use - nothing they could do if someone is selling on the cheap. Should SQ behave like the luxury brands by burning away their unsold inventory?

Surely they could have opted to furnish the A380 themselves but they didn't.
For SQ at the time of contract that was the most hassle-free option (nobody would have thought about PEY at the time the leasing contract was negotiated), just return the plane as it was delivered.
I suppose that SQ estimated a cycle time for their seats and by the time the airplane would have to be returned, a new product was supposed to be rolled out. Reality is different right now, but plans do change over the years.

Anyway, Hifly is not competing with SQ with the same product on the same routes, so why should SQ bother after all. Hifly's business model is totally different.

True in general, but some Norwegian 787 flights are being operated by the Hifly A380.

This would get very interesting in the unlikely event that Norwegian subs their 787 on the SIN-LGW sector with the Hifly whalejet...

If that happens then it would be egg on face albeit no hollandaise sauce.

I don't really understand all the hooplah about this. It's an old product that comes without the service and amenities that make SIA stand out. On an operator that doesn't offer scheduled flights but capacity to other airlines.

And keeping in mind the cost of upgrading an A380 cabin (about USD60m per plane to go from old to new layout for the SIA planes), I'm not surprised that neither SIA, nor the lessor, nor the new operator wanted to go down that route.

Think of it as a free upgrade for overbooked Holiday inn guest.

I dont see the big deal with HiFly having SQ's old Suites (without the service, of course). SQ's ex 747 and A340-300 retained their original seats when sold to TransAero and Emirates (via Boeing) in the past.

TransAero's 747 with full SQ interior
