  • Credit card service fee to be implemented on Singapore-based booking from 20 Jan 2018

Was doing some flight search on singaporeair.com and was greeted with this message in the header.

From 20 January 2018, a non-refundable service fee may be added to each ticket issued on certain fares paid for via credit card.

What are the credit card service fees that will apply?

    For flights departing from: Singapore
Credit card service fee (per ticket):1.30% of the total amount, capped at SGD50

What forms of payments are exempted from the credit card service fee?

All other non-credit card payment methods – for example, debit cards or PayPal, where accepted.

For tickets issued in Singapore, the credit card service fee will also be exempted for purchases made with The American Express Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Credit Card. However, please note that this excludes purchases made through Apple Pay and Android Pay as the card information made through such payment modes are encrypted and the card type will not be known.

This is not good. It looks like SIA is degenerating into adopting low cost airline methods to bump up its "profitability"

They've been saying for a long time that they will do it in Australia. I've never been charged this fee, so it depends on what these "certain" fares are. None of mine have met that category.

In what scenarios will I be charged a credit card service fee?

A service fee will be added to bookings paid with a credit card for flights out of certain countries. The service fee will not be applied to additional fares or fees collected when you make changes to your booking. The service fee will also not apply to redemption bookings.

For tickets purchased through a mix of KrisFlyer miles and cash, the service fee will only be applied to the portion paid for by a credit card.

For tickets issued in Singapore, the credit card service fee will only be applied to the all-inclusive fare for certain fare types.
CC fee is only applicable for Lite fare ex-SIN.

And there I was having a casual convo with my friend just last week, with him stating that he pays through AXS for his budget flights to avoid paying the CC fee while he does not have to worry about that when he books SQ.

In the Netherlands SQ already charges a credit card fee for one year or so, which is a shame. However, there is a possibility to pay by debit card without a surcharge, which is called iDeal. And PayPal as well.

SQ should differentiate itself, but they are looking more and more like a low cost carrier. Paid seat selection along with the lowest fares, which will be commencing soon is another example. Wouldn't surprise me if they start with booking fees too, like crazy KLM does in the Netherlands.

Looks like SQ management is trying to do whatever they can to pull their revenues up. The 1.6% cost recovery is quite significant for them as Singapore is their biggest market. It will impact Y and PY pax most as the $50 cap would mean that all fares above S$3,150 would not incur this fee. It's good to know that one can still use debit cards or Paypal to skip the fees.

Confirmed as just for Economy Lite fares. It was very poorly presented by SQ when it first appeared though.

Singapore Airlines introduce Credit Card surcharge, but only on the cheapest economy tickets
