  • Should Krisflyer introduce status credits to replace status miles?

Currently in order to become Elite silver or Elite Gold on Singapore Airlines, you will need to fly 25000 and 50000 * 100% miles respectively on board SQ, *A or Virgin Australia.

However, this system is disadvantaging short haul frequent flyers, especially those who are on business trips around SE Asia frequently as they will need to fly extremely frequently (almost a return trip a week) in order to earn/maintain Gold status.

Moreover, as budget airlines are offering attractive prices and perks to Premium short haul passengers, the yields for short haul routes of course is declining because loyal frequent flyers are leaving.

Therefore, I propose the use of Status Credit system to replace the current qualifying system for Elite Silver and Elite Gold:

    An example is as follows:

One-Way Miles Discount Economy Full Fare Economy Premium Economy Business
    0 - 750 10 20 30 40
    751 - 1,500 15 30 45 60
    1,501 - 3,000 20 40 60 80
    3,001 - 5,000 30 60 90 120
    5,001 - 8,000 40 80 120 160
    8,000+ 50 100 150 200

And we can have 300 SC + 4 eligible sectors on SQ and MI to become Elite Silver and 600 SC + 8 eligible sectors on SQ and MI to become Elite Gold.

I believe this system has the following advantages:

    1. It will become easier for Short Haul flyers on Business to reach Gold thus encourage loyalty on SQ and MI.

    2. It allows Australian and New Zealand flyers to reach gold easier, thus they can fly more on Singapore Airlines rather than Emirates, Etihad or Qatar, and therefore can improve profitability and patronage on SW Pacific routes

    3. Allows SQ to status match with other airlines based on the number of Status Credits earned on each sector. For example 1 Cathay Pacific Club Point/1 Qantas Status Credit = 1 Krisflyer Status Credit to lure passengers away from Oneworld Airlines

    4. Allows linkage to local loyalty programmes to earn status credits. For example, Shop S$100 in a local supermarket per month for 1 status credit.
