It was even posted on their Facebook status which copped some flak before an update with condolences to the victims of the flight.

Yes, someone posted this screenshot on airliners.net and said the aircraft behind MH17 was SQ 351.

It's hard to express enough sympathy as is needed. The plane was absolutely packed. If all infants were on a parent's lap the number of empty seats was only two. Unlike the MH370 tragedy, there is no mystery here, just shock. It could have been any plane in the area on any day so the tragedy cuts close to us. RIP to all victims and my thoughts to all who have lost them, especially to those in the HIV community who have lost dedicated humanitarians and researchers bound for the world conference in MEL to this senseless act.

imagine this.... now that a SAM could reach up to 10k meters to bring down a plane, would the various terrorist organisation start procuring such SAM and target civilian flights to make a name for themselves......

I should quit travelling and send my assistant instead... hmmmmm....

Indeed it could have been an SQ plane!

                    This is from SQ website:

Singapore Airlines flights not using Ukraine airspace

In response to queries from the public, Singapore Airlines wishes to advise customers that our flights are not using Ukraine airspace.
Note what is NOT said and the tense used.

Wonder if anyone will probe SQ on why they did not err on the side of caution and still chose the same flight path when many other airlines were already avoiding that area.

"Immediately after the crash yesterday, several other airliners followed the same path and did not re-route, including Singapore Airlines and Kazakhstan Airlines. Etihad and Emirates were also originally reported as taking the same route, but both airlines later confirmed they did not operate in Ukrainian airspace."

if reports are accurate, the SAM involved is not those man-portables like Stinger or SA-7 which have very short range and much lower altitude. The SAM involved is reportedly the SA-17 aka BUK, which requires a control-vehicle to coordinate with (typically 3) launcher vehicles (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buk_mis...em_in_2010.jpg). So this is a sophisticated SAM system

SQ's silence is deafening ... Guess they didn't.

Singapore's national carrier also did not comment either on reports that flight SQ351 from Copenhagen, Denmark, which was flying over the area at the time was about 25km away from flight MH17 when it was allegedly shot down.

SEOUL (AFP) - The Malaysian airliner apparently shot down over rebel-held eastern Ukraine was flying over airspace that a number of other Asian carriers abandoned months ago because of security concerns.

South Korea's two main airlines, Korean Air and Asiana, as well as Australia's Qantas and Taiwan's China Airlines said they had all rerouted flights from as early as the beginning of March when Russian troops moved into Crimea.

"We stopped flying over Ukraine because of safety concerns," Asiana spokeswoman Lee Hyo-Min said.

Korean Air re-routed its flights 250 kilometres (160 miles) south of Ukraine from March 3 "due to the political unrest in the region", an official for the carrier told AFP.
