  • Weekend in Shanghai, Stay at Hyatt on the Bund

    Introduction

I had business to attend to in Shanghai last Friday.
My last trip here was in 2007 so we decided to make a weekend out of it.
Also it gave us the oppurtunity to:
    1. Try out Hyatt on the Bund
    2. Look at preparations for World Expo 2010

    The Flight

( There is an article in the August 2009 issue of Silverkris magazine with good advice on how to write a travel blog )

It was a 773, unfortunately unmodified.
I expected a routine flight so I didn't make notes or take pictures.
As things turned out, I thought it would be my last flight!

Everything went smoothly till we approached PVG.
The pilot had given us an ETA.
Then, we were put in a holding pattern.
Pilot came on to announce a delay ( I think he said 40 mins ) due to air traffic congestion.
After about 30 mins, we started our approach.

We were flying through thick clouds. Rain was streaming across my window.
I could see lightning flashes ( not lightning bolts ) in the clouds some distance away.
But the scary bit for me was the turbulence: Feeling weightless one moment, and being pressed down onto the seat the next.
And the changing engine pitch as the plane attempted to land.

I think we tried twice to land.
    I remember thinking:
    1. I'm glad it's still daylight
    2. Thank goodness I'm in a 777!

The pilot came back on to say that we would have to use radar guidance to land.
The attempt was successful, but I remember cloud cover was very low and I could only see land when we were almost on top of the airfield.

I've flown a lot but have not really been so scared before.
I think it is because in the past year or two for whatever reason, they have stopped the IFE before landing.
For that matter, they only start IFE after takeoff.
Now I have nothing to distract myself when the weather is bad...

The next day, Channel News Asia reported that 2000 PAXs were stuck in PVG because of bad weather....

Hyatt on the Bund ( Public Areas )

As far as loyalty programs go for me, it's SQ for airlines and Hyatt for hotels.
What I look for in hotels is good design, and Hyatt and me have the same taste in interior design.
They use the Japanese ID company named unforgettably... Super Potato!
    Clean lines, minimalistic, very Zen.

Few lobbies have the "wow factor" that greets you when you step into this hotel.
The reception lies in front of you where it should be.
Above you, the glass atrium soars 4 stories high ( LL, L, M and 3rd floor )
and is flanked on either side by hotel services ( restaurants, shops, business centre and conference rooms ).

A waterfall ( outside at the back of the atrium ) appears to flow into the hotel in the lower lobby towards the spa/pool/gym ( beneath the reception ).

    Links
2 lifts connect all the levels.
A spiral staircase connect L and LL ( spiral staircases seems to be a signature of Super Potato ).
Lastly walkway runs above the Reception on the Mezzanine level.
    I love it!

    The Reception

Looking down from L to LL. Waterfall ( left of picture ) flows into the hotel

Looking back at the Reception. Spa below it in LL. Nice glass lifts.

I love the soaring space and brightness

The waterfall ( outside ) seen from the Spa

The "river" continues into the Spa.

Fung Shui experts care to comment on the soundness of the design?

Hyatt on the Bund ( River View King )

Being hot and humid, Shanghai is not the best place to visit in the Summer.
But because it is the low season and we paid in advance,
we got rates at this hotel that are cheaper than Homewood Suites we stayed at in Connecticut!
( Not that we dislike Homewood Suites mind you. It's my younger daughter's favorite hotel! )

      Location

The hotel is a bit out of the way.
But we were only planning to explore the Bund in our short stay so it was well located for that purpose.
As things turned out, we were unable to do even that as the Bund has been turned into a giant construction yard as Shanghai prepares for World Expo 2010.
      • The Promenade by the Huang Pu River was closed.
      • They are building an underground expressway under the existing road.
      • Many buildings are boarded up for renovation/sprucing up.

      Transport

There is no access to the subway nearby.
We went everywhere ( actually only to Xin Tian Di ) by taxi.
It's inexpensive. Ride to XTD cost us 17 RMB.

      Check In

When we checked in, we opted for an upgrade that gave us free internet access in the room and use of the lounge.
Complimentary breakfast and afternoon cocktail too.
I think we were put on the top ( 32nd Floor ) of the East Tower for easy access to the lounge ( located on 3rd floor of East Tower ).
I thought West Tower has better views, being closer to the Bund.
But the top few floors are occupied by the very trendy VUE bar and French restaurant so you will be on a lower floor.

So this is the view of our room from the entrance

Looking back. Open plan bathroom. Now you see it...

      ...now you don't!

The desk, with a complicated phone which I never really mastered

      Ample power points

The fridge is on the other side of the wash basin

The bathroom with walk-in wardrobe at end.
To the Right: Loo and bath/shower
      To the Left: Wash basin

This is a Hyatt Regency grade hotel.
Amenities kit comprehensively trumps the Grand Hyatt New York.
As does everything else about this hotel for that matter...

The Bathtub. One thing you will find in all Super Potato designs.
They playfully make you try and figure out how to use things.
In this bathtub, you have to try and figure out which are the hot/cold taps, shower head & faucet.
And how to switch from faucet to shower head.
( At Park Hyatt Seoul, you have to figure out which lift takes you where?! )

I will travel to the ends of the world for a RAIN SHOWER!!
      Top dial: Controls rain shower
      Middle dial: Controls hand shower
      Lowest dial: Temperature control

      To be continued...

        Nice review

The furnishings and decor of the rooms seem to be quite similar to the new Hyatt in Sha Tin in Hong Kong.

Shanghai is a big mess now with all the constructions going on for the world expo. Was there 2 weeks ago and stayed at the Grand Hyatt. The whole surrounding area was a complete nightmare to navigate.

I stayed at the hotel in late 2007, shortly after it opened.
I really like the design of the rooms, pool & spa.
Service was excellent too, I must add.

            Thanks.

The interiors at Hyatt Regency in Sha Tin were also designed by Super Potato.

One of my most vivid memories staying at Grand Hyatt Shanghai was working out at the gym
and gazing out at the clouds outside below me!

            Fully agree.
            We loved the rooms.
Worth staying just for the views.
            The Spa was excellent.
            The gym was comprehensively equipped.

              The Views from Room 3230

This is where our room was located on the 32nd floor

The sun came out after we checked into the room.
              I took these shots.
I was hoping during the weekend for better opportunities for pictures.
              It never came.
The weekend was wet, wet, wet...

The Bund. Actually hotel should have been named Hyatt beside the Bund

Monument of the People's Heroes, sitting in Huangpu Park, can be seen wrapped in blue tarp where Suzhou Creek meets Huang Pu River.

The Peninsula Hotel can be made out to the behind the monument.

View of Pudong and the iconic Pearl Tower

              The Huang Pu River.
Watching shipping passing up and down the river is mesmerising
              One problem with the room:
I was woken up twice the 1st night by fog horns from shipping!

View of the West Tower from my room
The VUE bar can be seen at the top 2 floors of the tower
There's a French restaurant below it
So rooms in West Tower have closer views of Bund
but you can't get as high a floor compared to East Tower

From the hotel corridor on opposite facing to our room.
I know of no other city in the world where you can get a shot of a
Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt and Hyatt Regency ( Hyatt on the Bund ) in one picture!
Grand Hyatt is the "low" block sandwiched between Pearl Tower and Park Hyatt.

                The VUE Bar

The bar is located on the top 2 floors of West Tower.
The lift takes you up to 32nd floor
and you enter what looks like a wine cellar
A staircase leads to the roof top bar

Unlike other bars, the best time to go to this one is around 630-7pm.
That way, you are able to take pictures of the Bund and Pudong.
In daylight and when the lights come on.

                The wine cellar look.
Which continues along your walk to the bar

The air conditioned bar on the 32nd floor

Spiral staircase leads to the roof top bar section, part of which is open air

                Hot tub!
Directly above the bar counter downstairs
To our disappointment, this section was closed because of the rain

The drinks menu gives rules for what is considered appropriate attire in the hot tub

                  Views from VUE

haf, you gotta come here and do the views some justice

Very low cloud cover. At times the "pearl" was hidden from view

At night, a flotilla of brightly lit craft carried tourists on sightseeing or dinner cruises.

There's a boarding point for these cruises next to the hotel

Wai Bai Du Bridge over Suzhou Creek just before it meets Huang Pu River.
The lights keep changing colour at night.
Across the creek, The Peninsula Hotel can be seen.
It looks like a smaller version of the one in HK.
And it's ready for World Expo 2010.
More than I can say for the road works in front of it...

                      The Spa, Gym and Pool

The entrance to the Spa is at Lower Lobby, directly under Reception desk in Lobby level.
Turn right to to very stylish changing rooms.
Turn left to the gym & pool.
The Spa therapy rooms run parallel to the "river" in the Lower Lobby
( at the left when facing the waterfall).

                      Gym
                      Comprehensively equipped.
But I'm no fan of Star Trac equipment.

                      Pool
Looks inviting but we never got to try.

                        Excellent TR + photos, 9V-SIA!

This Hyatt is of particular interest to me since the PH is very inconvenient for my family. The Bund might have to suffice for now as the former "Regent" (now called the Longemont) did not correct all their building and service errors to Carlson Hotels' satisfaction and were stripped of the brand name. Disappointing as it was a beautiful property...just with extremely poor execution.
                        HUGE AL
