Finnair is to launch daily non-stop flights between Singapore and Helsinki from May 2011. The airline will operate the Singapore service with Airbus A340 aircraft.

“Singapore is one of Asia's most important destinations for business passengers, because the Asian operations of many European companies are centred there. For Asian passengers, the Singapore route offers excellent onward connections via Finnair's route network to 50 European destinations,” said Finnair's President & CEO Mika Vehviläinen.

Finnair is the largest Nordic carrier with a strong European network that includes capitals like London, Paris, Copenhagen and Stockholm.

The Singapore-Helsinki route will provide an important link to facilitate people and trade flows between Singapore and Finland, especially with the presence of major Finnish companies in Singapore, such as Neste Oil, Nokia and Kone.

Traffic to Changi originating from the Nordic countries has also been healthy, growing 8% in the April 2009 to April 2010 period.

Changi Airport Group’s Director, Market Development, Mr Lim Ching Kiat, said, “We are delighted at Finnair’s decision and look forward to supporting their operations at Changi Airport. The commencement of non-stop Singapore-Helsinki flights strengthens Changi's connectivity and is a testament to the growth potential of traffic between Singapore and Europe.”

They have the staggered flat beds on the 330s. Not on the 340s yet.

                            Finnair to launch Singapore route

                            Finnair to launch Singapore route

Finland’s flag carrier will commence daily flights from Helsinki to Singapore next year, offering an alternative route to the Southeast Asian city for European travellers.

The new service will launch on May 30, 2011, and will be operated using Airbus A340 aircraft.

Timings have not yet been released, but Finnair says it will operate “a timetable that suits the needs of business passengers”. UK passengers will hope that the Singapore service allows for timely connections to and from the twice-daily flights between Manchester and Helsinki, and four-times daily services from Heathrow to the Finnish capital.

Finnair has expanded its Asian offering in recent years, and now serves nine cities in China, Japan, India, South Korea and Thailand. The carrier’s Helsinki hub is located close to the most direct route for many flights between Europe and Asia, meaning Finnair is well-positioned to pick up connecting traffic between the two continents, with around 50 European destinations within the carrier’s network.
