I had the pleasure to fly to Hong Kong from San Francisco and return recently in business class. I have been an avid reader of SQTalk over the months and years, but it has been a long time since I have flown SQ in business. I also flew CX from Hong Kong to BKK and return in J, so I had something to compare the SQ experience with. I will be brief.
I felt that overall the SQ experience was quite good, largely due to the energy, friendliness and enthusiasm of the crew. They were especially good on the outbound leg from SFO to HKG for some reason. I also felt that the CX crew demonstrated the same level of those traits.
I think that the spacebed seat alone made the expense of the SQ business class fare worth the money. It was better than I expected. I learned that I can sleep comfortably on my side, and the slight angle is not a problem. I was downstairs, as I really liked the sense of space I get with the theater type seating arrangement.
The only area that was a little disappointing related to some of the food items. Some were quite good, and others less so. On the SQ 2 flight from Hong Kong I felt that the over dining experience was less than on SQ 1. This confirmed some of the notes I have read about a slight decline in the consistancy of product from crew to crew.
I think I might need to experience CX's LAX-HKG J class route to do a fair comparison. But the overall SQ experience was fine, especially due to the friendliness of the flight attendants.
Also, I would have to say that I would give the edge to CX's Wing/Pier lounge over SKL at least in Hong Kong. The selection of food items seemed substantially better.
