  • The Nines, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Portland, Oregon, USA

Our first return stay at The Nines this year. Occupying the top nine floors of the heritage Meier & Frank building (est. 1908) which some of our local Portland friends remember running around as children during its heyday as the department store in Portland (Macy's now occupies the lower five floors). And speaking of Macy's, our room rate this time (the lowest at time of booking) was actually a shopping package which gave us welcome amenities including a Macy's tote (nice large, red one), a 10 percent discount card, and valet parking.

Many of the heritage features of the original building had been preserved in the exterior as well as interior of the hotel, including in The Georgian meeting room which on this afternoon was being used by Hyatt Hawai'i Hotels & Resorts and Classic Vacations.

Check-in was done efficiently enough, after which we sauntered over to the concierge desk to make a dinner reservation at The Urban Farmer, the in-house restaurant/steakhouse with the very pleasant concierge, Ms L. As SPG Plat, we had been upgraded on this stay to a suite, albeit still an atrium view/eagle's eye view over The Urban Farmer restaurant on the lobby level. Room decor struck us as St. Regis-lite.

We wasted no time in going back downstairs to the lift level to walk around the corner to the Macy's entrance on the other side of the building as we were in desperate need of a new suitcase. Fortunately for us, Macy's was having a sale on luggage, and when we showed our 10 percent coupon to the very helpful Ms J, she produced another coupon for 20 percent off valid for five days (we love Portland people)!

We went back to our room happy having crossed an item off our to-do list. Later in the evening, we went to The Urban Farmer where happy hour was still in full swing. The crowd was decidedly young and beautiful, a reflection of how Portland is coming into its own as one of the major urban hotspots of the Pacific Northwest and capital of West Coast culture (with a good mix of hipsters and bohemians, I might add ). We also spotted a table of four young, Gulf Arab men who were busy on their iPhones while sipping soda and waiting for their food. Another table had a young Scotsman in town on business who had decided to walk into the restaurant for dinner while on his way to the airport to catch a flight later in the evening.

It turns out that making the dinner reservation with the hotel concierge was a smart smove as we were presented with a complimentary glass of bubbly. We ordered the American Texas wagyu ribeye with a side of creamed spinach accompanied by a glass of Oregon pinot noir. This was preceeded by The Urban Farmer's famous cornbread and Parker rolls. On this evening, we were waited on by the very hospitable Mr C.

All things considered, a satisfactory return stay at The Nines this year. We found the staff to be friendly and courteous which is typical of Portland peeps. While not our regular hotel in town, we do expect to increasingly give them more business this year so long we continue to enjoy our stays here at The Nines.
