  • SQ A330 Withdrawal Thread

The first SQ A330-300 to be withdrawn from SQ, 9V-STJ, has been painted in white. She is in the process of being returned to lessor.

Flew on STH on TPE-SIN on SQ879 on 8th March. It's really in a sorry state. I was at 45A and the screen will swing out during take off as it was loose. On normal cruise, the vibrations will also cause the screen to come loose by a bit.

The plastics in the lavatory was cracked and only held together by clear tape.

Reminds me of one of SQ's old 772s.

I'm curious as to why this particular A330. Interesting to note that it joined the fleet exactly 5 years ago from today.

This has been in the cards for a while now. At last year's results briefing, they had mentioned that one of the A330s will leave by this financial year end (ending March 2015). Probably it was on a non-renewable 5 year lease.

I could care less which A330 is about to leave the fleet, but as stated previously as one of the number from here who was on the inaugural flight to BNE a few years back it's worrying they are starting to withdraw them. That flight doesn't feel that recent, but it doesn't feel that long ago either...

A330 has always been an interim measure for SQ as they are waiting for the delayed A350-900 to arrive later this year.

One thing which irritates me is that A330 is retiring earlier than B772s which they don't carry new AVOD equipment and I think they should go first and leave A330s for enhanced customer experience.

But all in all, looks like SQ has not been planning to increase its fleet with A330s. I hope at the year end results presentation, we can see SQ starts expanding again (such as adding more flights to HKG, SYD, MEL, LHR and more destinations) and use A350 as a means for expansion.

                  Most A330's are on 5 & 6 year leases, I gather the A350's will be replacing the A330's before they retire the 772, 77E & 773's.

                    9V-STP

9V-STP was spotted today in Transasia colours undergoing an airtest as SQ8893. She has left the SQ fleet at the end of her lease.

STJ went at the 5-year mark and now STP.

By October, all of the first batch (STA-S) will have hit the 5-year mark. The first eight, STA-H have passed 6 years already.

How come the early ones are not leaving first? Thought it would be logical to start with STA.

Some of the leases have renewal options, and where they are economical, SQ has been exercising these options. It's returning only the planes without renewal options, or hefty increases at renewal.

And I suppose if there are other customers want to lease SQ's A330, the lease finance company will have a look at the lease terms of each individual aircraft and select the ones where the lease is due soon for first available delivery.

Finally we now know 2 A330-300s returned to previous lessor, 1 went on to Transasia Airlines, where is the other one now?

it's about time they withdraw their 772 and non-77W. the IFEs on those aircrafts are annoying (reminds me of watching analogue TV sometimes) - the only thing good from those aircrafts are the more comfortable seats in Y class. While I understand that 333 are all leased, isn't it about time to retire their older sisters.
