The tech crew required for this flight is at least 4. Heard a flight to Zurich last week had a similar pax load.

Wonder how is this financially feasible to fly with such load factors ? At least with a cargo flight, they could save on cabin crew costs.

Yes need 4 tech crew to operate in fact any flights above 12 hours. It's more of a publicity and PR thing rather than any financial consideration as even with 30 pax, it will be a substantial loss in view of the long 18 hour plus flight one way, and with even a limited cabin crew of 8 to 10.

pax load factor is not the primary intent of this flight.

From SQ press release in post #6 of this thread
SIA also anticipates significant cargo demand from a range of industries based in the New York metro area, including pharmaceuticals, e-commerce and technology firms. The new service will provide the only non-stop air cargo link from the U.S. Northeast to Singapore, which serves as a regional distribution hub for many major U.S.-based companies.

It would be more of a publicity and PR exercise to have this flight.
Do you know how much cargo is being carried, the composition of the cargo, or the yield? There is a chance that SQ had secured and sold cargo capacity to freight forwards and shippers prior to even publicly announcing the flight. Globally, there is still a shortfall in cargo capacity, and carriers can command a yield premium. Cargo is a big part of these non-stop flights. In the recent Q2 results news release, the JFK flight is said to support "cargo and passenger traffic". It's not an accident that cargo was mentioned before passenger. Hence it cannot be discounted that SQ hasn't already crunched the numbers and determined that it won't be a money pit.

SQ is a for-profit business, not a government vehicle for marketing and PR. Even when times are good, SQ is not an airline that operates flights for prestige or publicity. In these times, airlines including SQ are trying to minimize cash burn, which means not operating flights unnecessarily if there's no revenue or performing poorly financially. Furthermore, aid/funding from the Singapore government isn't for SQ to splurge on meaningless exercises in publicity.

I think the freight cost can be around US$8/kg to US$10/kg. I don’t have the exact rate but my company recently did some airfreight from Vietnam to LAX at US$8.00/kg.
So if SQ manage to carry 40000 kg of cargo, that will be around US$320000 one way.

Yep, and of the three in J one is on an award ticket and another is SQ staff, so not the most profitable flight they have ever operated....

13 cabin crew and four tech crew according to the SQTalker on board.

What PR and publicity have you seen about the flight?. I cant recall seeing any, unlike when they normally launch flights like this. The idea that is it for 'PR and publicity' in the current environment, with record losses and redundancies and the numbers of people travelling at record lows would be an interesting business strategy....

The bellyhold capacity of the new A350-900s, at 16 tonnes, is right on that average. Actual LD3 capacity underfloor 36 Max pallet number underfloor 11 Bulk hold volume 11.3 m³ Total volume (Bulk loading) 172.4 m³
And given the fuel costs for a 18 hour plus flight and hotel accomodation for 17 tech and cabin crew for 3 nights/4 days before their next flight back and the flight crew flying and night stop allowances, these adds up to quite a bit on expenses.

The first SQ24 have a flight time of 17hrs.
For the return SQ23, will they use the polar route ?

SQ23 is near Ireland now, returning via Europe instead. The flight time should be around 17hrs.

For the inaugural flight there was just reportedly one pax in EY so he have the whole section to him. And looks like on other flights too, there were less than 10 economy pax on average, and all can have the whole 3 rows for sleep too.
