Not sure why you find it strange. Singapore was one of the first places to report it outside China* and at the time of that notice had one of the highest numbers of cases outside China. Plus it has a lot of business and leisure travellers in the country and through the airport.

*I know, we can all make our own minds up about how honest certain other countries in the region are being about home many cases they have...
So you are going to avoid us here in SIN till this blows over? Ohh no, we miss you .

Anyways, in all seriousness, I would agree that this will get worse before it gets better. Not just for SQ, but travel in general (airlines, hotels, events, etc.).

At least SG is managing the situation and response well (personal view of course) and being very tough on folks & companies who try to pull "crap" like violating quarantine, lying about travels etc. Several people had their work permits or even permanent residency cancelled and some companies had employment pass privileges suspended for a few years.

    • Sfo to sing

Just did sfo to sing on the rescheduled a350. Flight probably had a 20% load. It was crazy. They didn’t have menus the crew looked very worried. So many empty rows in economy. Strangely I cam back through sing to Seattle. Flight was full. Changhi airport is so quiet too. Crazy.

      • According to SCMP, Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon have 120 aircraft idling on the ground at any given time; which accounts more than half of its fleet.
Wonder how mant planes SIA have grounded as can see easily 6 SQ planes parked at North remote bays in the day and 3 A380s parked over at the other remote bays. Singapore Airlines, one of Cathay’s closest rival, has temporarily suspended over 3,000 flights, from February until the end of May. In addition, the management team is taking a 15% pay cut; they will also be offering a voluntary no-pay leave scheme to employees.

Well not sure how many SQ planes are "under-utilized" at the moment, but SIA still doesn't seem to view this as an opportunity to send a 77W or A359 onto the lovely SQ630 / SQ639 SIN-HND-SIN run. Especially SQ639 as a 2:00am departure red eye where sleep matters gets this lovely 773 with Weber seats in J (angled flat).

Even SQ856/861 are using 773 this month. They should just use the fuel efficient A350 instead.

Seem like the 772ER n A330 are still flying as well. 4x773 is also flying. Guess SQ are just rotating the fleets instead of storing entirely.

            • well, CX's fleet is divisible into different catagories for different uses.

They have 777-300s configured high density, which I'd believe are for mainland routes. Their 77Ws also come in differing configs.

I guess it'll be easier to say "lets park 9 out of 12 of the regional 773s" or "lets park Ver 2 of the 77Ws".

SQ, on the other hand, uses a mix of aircraft on almost all their routes...many of them do overnight long-hauls and fill in the regional routes in the day - aside from the A330s & remaining B772s - yeah, maybe they could park those. but i'd guess they wont want to park leased aircraft (the A330s) or fly a regional/LH A350 to Phuket/BKK.

              • SQ have cut flight cancellations jump to 3,700 over the next few months, with 14% of planned services cut in March 2020 alone. There be likely more cuts in Apr to May and cancellations of flights have extended to Europe and even to US.

You have to remember the crew need to keep up their hours. If they park a number of 777s and A330s the crews may not gain enough hours and impact their ability to fly the aircraft.

                  • Dont think its because of the tech crew as they will be still ok as they wont be totally grounded or furlouged as it meant only crew will fly less hours than they have been doing before the Covid19 flight disruptions. Its likely that SQ decided to fly the A330s as they will be returning to the lessors soon and for the 772s and 773s to use up their remaining hours before they are send for storage or scrap, than to ground these planes.

                    • The Singapore Government has announced a travel ban for people from South Korea, Northern Italy and Iran.

I wonder whether it means SQ's SIN-ICN service as well as SIN-BUS services will be immediately suspended?

Also what will happen to SIN-MXP-BCN? Certainly you don't want to go to Spain and back home with a stay-home notice because you just transited through Milan.

                      • If it's anything like China, I'd expect a 3 weekly SIN-ICN service to still be provided to allow residents to get home.

SIN-BCN may skip MXP and go direct.

SQ doesn't fly to Iran anyway.

Don’t think this is the reason. The 777-200 will be gone soon. A330 are going off as well. So guess the crews have already undergo training for other plane types.

Guess they just dont want to change the plane types to avoid having to change the seat selections. (So as to concentrate on dealing with the rebooking).

                              Yes and these reasons too.

                              • SQ finally updated the waiver/cancellation for Korea n Italy flights. Plus change fee waiver for Japan

Very soon, they might need to add fee waiver for Germany, France Spain n USA?
