Four More Airlines to Commence Operations at Changi Airport Terminal 3 from 26 March 2008

From 26 March 2008, passengers of China Eastern Airlines, Jet Airways, Qatar Airways and United Airlines will depart from and arrive at Singapore Changi Airport's new Terminal 3 which opened for operations on 9 January 2008. These four carriers, which are currently operating from Terminal 1, will join Singapore Airlines in operating from Terminal 3. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) is facilitating the airlines' shift by conducting trials to prepare the airlines for operations at Terminal 3.

Mr Lim Kim Choon, CAAS Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, said, "CAAS is working hand-in-hand with our airline partners to facilitate their shift from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 to ensure that all aspects of their operations are carried out smoothly. Their operations at Terminal 3 will enable us to optimise the capacity and facilities of the terminals at Changi Airport. With this shift, their passengers will get to enjoy a refreshing Changi experience as they make use of the facilities and services of the new Terminal 3."

The four airlines are undergoing integrated airport system trials involving passenger check-in, baggage handling, staff familiarisation and "live" commercial trial flights to test the actual passenger departure and arrival processes. The objective of these trials, which have been carried out since February 2008, is to ensure that the airlines establish, integrate and test their systems and procedures in a live-like environment ahead of their shift to Terminal 3. The trials also provide opportunities for the airlines' staff to familiarise themselves with the new terminal.

CAAS is also putting in place measures to communicate the impending commencement of operations by these four airlines at Terminal 3. These include the updating of airport directories and signs within the terminal buildings as well as dissemination of circulars and vehicle decals to ground transport service providers such as coach and taxi drivers to generate awareness

Passengers and airport visitors can visit Changi Airport's website www.changiairport.com for more details. Passengers can also check for flight information conveniently while on the move via their mobile phones or personal digital devices at http://wap.changiairport.com/fis. This wireless application protocol (WAP) complements the flight information sources already in place, such as Teletext (a text based television flight information service), Changi Airport's toll-free telephone flight enquiry system number 1800-5424422 as well as the airport website and flight information televisions within the terminals mentioned above.

China Eastern Airlines, Jet Airways, Qatar Airways and United Airlines operate a total of 148 weekly flights from Singapore to 12 cities viz. Shanghai, Kunming, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Doha, Jakarta, Atlanta, Chicago, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Washington DC.

Actually they should move even more airlines from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 or at least 2 lor...You see Terminal 1 is the smallest, yet handles the most airlines...heard that because there are too many priorities given to SIA, soairlines are very hard to persuade."sigh" should free up more space for other airlines

Seriously, I don't think its about the number of airlines operating in each Terminal. Based on 2006 figures, T1 handled 13 million passengers while T2 handled 23 million (all figures are rounded upwards). With the split and also taking into account the percentage increase in pax capacity, we should see an almost even split in passenger numbers for all three terminals.

Of course we will also see more airlines moving away from T1 to T2/T3/BT. Its just a matter of time. Last rumoured was for All Nippon, Asiana and Korean Air to move from T1 to T2.

Regarding the privileges given to SQ, maybe you can also list some down? If SQ was that privileged, CAAS would have built T3 big enough to handle all of SQ's flights rather than spilting them between the two terminals.

T1 handles many more airlines than the rest of the terminals. You are correct there. However, many of the airlines operating into T1 only have 1 flight a day and some just operate 3 flights a week. So effectively, T1 can handle a few more airlines and will still not hit their maximum capacity.

As for the second half of your statement, well, that's just baseless and ill-informed. Ask anyone from SQ and they'll tell you that CAAS treats foreign carriers like kings, while SQ has to squeeze every little privilege out of them.

*A has said SIN is one of the places they'll co-locate member airlines by end-08. Does anyone know which terminal?

But T4 won't be done in the near future. Works might start probably after 2020 I guess.

Spot on. The only airline with truly significant operations in T1 is Qantas and its affiliates. No other airline comes close except perhaps Garuda.

Last I heard was T2, but it seems to maintain the current spread, some airlines like MAS and PAL will then have to move to T1? Now that United is in T3, that prospect seems to be fair less likely.

A consolidation of *A airlines in T3 (Air China, Air India, All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, Thai Airways International all gotta move), consolidation of Southeast Asian airlines in T2 (by moving Bangkok Airways, Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, AirAsia, Vietnam Airlines), and the remainder in T1 sounds like a more interesting concept.

That is a fair prediction. When Terminal 3 opened in January 2008, Changi was operating at 78.6% capacity (36.7 million handled in 2007 vs 46.7 million maximum capacity). CAAS expects passenger numbers to reach 50 million by 2012 http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stori...337878/1/.html, so it will reach 68.5% capacity by then (50 million handled vs 73 million maximum capacity). It just needs to see usage growth to 57 million before the 78% treshold is reached once again, which is easily accomplished by 2015 based on current projections.
