  • Not sure if this will have any adverse impact on SQ's deliveries which have already been pushed back to 2022.[/QUOTE]

Do not think it is a problem for SIA as because of the covid19, air travel will not be expected to go back to pre covid levels for at least another 2 years. And SQ's oldest 77Ws will still be able to continue to fly for another 4 - 5 years if needed to.

    • The 3rd 777-9 flew for the 1st time.

      • The delay in Boeing delivering the 779 looks like a good move as due to the covid19, many of its 787s and even the Airbus A350s are being deferred by airlines for between 1 to 3 years.
The only thing with the 779 is that its fuselage is still not made of composite as if it were to then the weight reduction would meant a further reduced thrust needed from the engines and improve even more its fuel efficiency.

Seems like EK will be pushing their delivery into 2022

            • 777-9 1st delivery delayed to 2023, that would probably mean SQ won't take delivery until 2024-2025...

Interesting development, seems like SQ foresees a stronger rebound in travel demand after COVID-19 settles. AFAIK the 777-9 can sit up to 426 pax in 3 class config where the 787-10 sits 337 in SQ config

That was what I was wondering, that perhaps they're not expecting A380-level demand in the near- to mid-term and the 11 additional 777-9s will be sufficient. Or could it lead to retirement of some of the older 777-300ERs while keeping the A380 fleet as the flagship?

Ummm, no, the 787-10 is a short-to-medium haul aircraft, and the 777-9 is long haul

So they're exchanging a surfeit of medium haul aircraft (incl 737 Max now that Silkair is integrated) with long haul aircraft to replace older 77Ws and A380s, as others have said

                        • I think the additional SQ 777-9 will come end of the 2020s when more A380s/77Ws will be retired. Doubt SQ needs them in the next 5 years.

                          • SIA just increased its 779 by 11 more planes to bring it up to 31 779s. The 779s should be coming in from 2024 onwards.

Believed the 779s are to replace some of the A380s and some of the older 77Ws. SIA have already "retired" 7 A380s from its fleet and will only have 12 out of its 19 A380s when it resumes flying.
