looking back, SQ did spend money to refurbish Y class and install PEY into the A380s SKA-SKE even though they had merely a year or so remaining before they knew they were returning them to lessors.

from that, it appears SQ's priority may simply be in offering a consistent feel across its aircraft. in which case, the remaining lifespan of the aircraft doesn't matter in the decision to refurbish with 2006Y.

according to a captain i had a chat with, the few 772s were refitted with 2006Y at random..when it was convenient (i.e. during one of their major checks)..and apparently there arent plans to refit any other 772s.

will be interesting to see what their upcoming FY briefing will say about their fleet plans for the year ahead. i can only see that there are at most 13 A330s which could be returned to lessors.... in which case if the 772s & 773s are still being kept, may be for this reason (and until SQ receives sufficient 787-10s).
It certainly will be interesting to hear the next fleet projections. The pilot's comments are consistent with the fact they never announced a program of refitting, which is usually something SQ would do, but offering a consistent feel across aircraft is what has been sorely lacking in the past few years with long, drawn out 77W refits and the retention of SRJ, SRL and SVF.

Just one correction though- no work was ever done to Y class in the A380s other than pulling several rows out to install a PEY cabin, which could be explained by wanting flexibility in aircraft rostering.

There's still one A330 to leave this FY and that is definitely STF which hasn't flown for a month now.

        • Thanks FSJZ. I like the way you organize the list. Maybe the new publishers of SilverKris magazine (Ink is taking over SPH from the May issue) will be inspired by your presentation in how they list the fleet.

          • Just glanced through the fleet list in the SilverKris April issue. The fleet as on 1 April is 108, 1 short of FSJZ's most recent list. The mystery lies in A380. SQ lists 16 in fleet with 3 on order. But SKE is still flying. The only one not flying is SKM, but that's not scheduled to leave anytime soon.

            • 9V-SVL is in hanger. Her tail livery has been painted over. The Singapore Airlines and flag livery on the fuselage have been painted over too.

SKE is a mystery to us all. It should have stopped flying by now based on previous end of lease timelines.

And SKM hasn’t been in the air since 14 Jan...that’s a little longer than usual. SYJ has also been pulled from service. I still see what I believe is SQK parked around the hanger.

Should totally have an SQ fleet ops person in this forum! Hahaha

The fleet plan for fiscal year 17/18 had only 4 380s leaving by March 31. So the plan all along was for SKE to exit sometime April-May, with the lease expiring in June.

The real mystery is SKM. It's been out almost 3 months now. And now SQ is listing one less aircraft in its magazine, while SKE is still flying.

SYJ is probably having it's J cabin reupholstered. Recently been on a few 773 that have the dark brown seats now.

Sadly I think they've stopped with putting old 77W interiors into the 772/773s?

                      • Appreciate the updates as always FSJZ. SQ's second 78J 9V-SCB has been delivered to Singapore Airlines a few days back.

Just returned last night from PEK on SKE. The safety video couldn't play and they had to do a live demonstration with someone reading over the PA. First time seeing that ever. Then IFE failed and they had to reset 3 times. After we landed, some hydraulics couldn't work and we had to wait before the aircraft could dock at the bay. Add to that a child fell sick just after push back at PEK and the family opted to disembark which means their luggage has to be offloaded leading to a delay of an hour.

The cabin crew couldn't believe their luck! It was quite funny listening to their banter from the galley.

Is SKE more than 10 years old? I was in J and it is still very comfortable with everything working perfectly once the IFE was up.

It's almost 10 years old, just short by a couple of months. I'm on SQ807 next Friday so I'm going to hope for better luck than your flight!
