Well, there goes the conspiracy theory that he was dead, told by every other taxi driver I had in Singapore in the weeks after he escaped.

I had been told exactly the same by an Indian colleague here at the office, who had been working in Singapore few years back...

After being captured by the Indonesians last time and handed over to Singapore, hopefully the Singaporeans won't let him climb out of the toilet window again.

Well, according to Channel News Asia,
"Mas Selamat had swam across the Straits of Johor using an improvised flotation device to escape from the north shore of Singapore in February last year."

It was a joint operation between the internal security agencies of Singapore and Malaysia. Sg has been on the look out for him since his escape, lots of resources had been dedicated. They traced him to Johor and alerted their Malaysian counterparts. The Malaysian security agencies deserve a lot of credit too, Johor is large.

Well not quite our idea of the commercially-available arm floats we see. chances are he created an arm float out of something convenient like a plastic bag for example. Hence improvised.

What happened to the coast guard and the security forces stationed at the coast line ?? They are supposed to watch out for Mas Selamat to prevent him from swiming across !!

As a straits times journalist said (to justify why Minister of Home Affairs should not be fired) : "Terrorism does not start and stop with Mas Selamat".

So I am more concerned with processes in place to prevent terrorism rather than the capture of one terrorist - the fact that Mas Selamat managed to swim across the straits when everyone is watching worries me a lot !!

I would hope a hell of a lot of people, including some in very high places, will 'care' why he managed to escape from Singapore on an improvised flotatation device after probably the biggest manhunt in Singapore's history.

The whole saga has been very embarassing for Singapore, a place which (rightly) prides itself on doing things properly.

As for thinking everyone is safe now that one man is in custody.....
