  • The 'We Love Japan' - "What to do and Where to eat!" Guide

(This is a continuing 'work in progress'. More destinations will be updated in the subsequent posts as time goes by, in alphabetical order sorted by major/minor cities, and will try to make the first post an 'index' of sorts)

    Major Towns/Cities:

Tokyo: The capital of Japan and a megalopolis of Japanese culture. More to come...
    Osaka: More to come...
    Kyoto: More to come...
    Kobe: More to come...

    Minor Towns/Cities:

    Karatsu: Worth trying for -
'live' Ika sashimi (1st course) / tempura (2nd course). The views from the cliff-top castle, stunning - you can see all the little surrounding islands (and if you have time, take boat trips to them). A charming little train takes you there from Nagasaki (not the fast ones, so be prepared to let time pass you by). An even more scenic train takes you from Karatsu to Fukuoka as it winds its way along the coastline (great coastal scenery!). Saw some guesthouses along the coast that I'd love to one day go back and rent sort of like a beach shack (insanely cheap..!)

    All contributions welcomed!

Great idea. Let me start the ball rolling.

My meals at Ryugin and Nabura were edited to shorten my TR.

I'd like to post both meals here because they were outstanding.

    Ryugin

My wife had her notebook open and the 4 of us gave marks out of 10 for each dish. Very fun!

We must have been mistaken for food critics because we were given 3 extra dishes.

The chef came out to say goodbye to us after the meal!

    Entrance to Ryugin

The actual dinner, in correct order..

Abalone, fried taro & ginger sauce

Sea urchin & mountain yam with jelly sauce ( served cold )

Fish liver & leek in miso sauce

    Matsuba crab and crab soup

    Sashimi

    Clams with Mustard Soya Bean

Sea perch coated in crispy rice & stewed chestnut

Char grilled wagyu beef with raw onion & braised turnip coated in red miso

Vegetable rice with pickle & miso soup

        Nabura

Located in the basement, it is easy to miss as signage is only in Japanese
        .

They don't speak English but communicated what we ate by:
        1. referring to Japanese-English dictionary or
        2. showing us the raw product!

        Entrance

We sat at the counter but they had private rooms

        Crab sitting on crab roe

        Soft shell turtle dumpling soup

        Sashimi

        Grilled rockfish & scabbard

Sharks fin & abalone chawan mushi

        Yellowtail & daikin radish

        Lotus root steamed dumpling

I enjoyed the Nagasaki speciality, Toruko Raisu (Turkish Rice) which is even better than that other famous curry dish, Singapore noodles (available everywhere except Singapore)! A fried breaded pork cutlet together with curried rice and spaghetti on the same plate plus, e.g., an omelette, salad etc. Probably not too healthy but cheap and yummy!
