There maybe more connecting passenger potential in some of these markets but a wide-body SQ plane would be too big to match it with demand.

I think several routes such as Male, Hanoi, Surabaya, Bengaluru there are significant connecting traffic for two daily services and perhaps to make connection more convenient for different routes. However putting two widebody frequency daily maybe too much for the O&D traffic and thus a mix of SQ and MI is pursued.

Some smaller routes with significant transfer traffic but with great competition from LCCs like Medan, Penang, a double daily or multiple daily MI service makes more sense.

A quick check reveals TR operating 2 A319 (all leased) and 23 A320 (9 owned, 14 leased) aircraft. The age of the aircraft is 4.5-9.5 years with average age 6.4years for A320 and 9.4years for A319.

MI A320 fleet now consists of 3 A319 (1 leased 12.8yrs, 2 owned 8.3 yrs) with average age of 9.8 years; 8 A320 (3 leased 7.8-14yrs, 5 owned 4.8-6.3yrs) with average age of 7.3 year; 17 B737-800 (all owned) with average age 3.3 years and 5 B737 Max8 (all owned) with average age 0.5 year.

If SIA Group decides to transfer all 17 B737-800 and all 5 MI-owned A320 to Scoot and retain all 9 TR-owned A320, Scoot will have 31 narrow-body aircraft.

I wonder what will happen to majority of the A320 pilots with TR. Will they be converted to B737 pilots or will be asked to leave with this change of dynamics in the LCC operating aircraft now...

Sorry I was not clear: I meant under the SQ brand using narrow body aircraft.

SQ for now does not have any narrow body aircraft.

Wouldn't the A321neo give even greater flexibility with the range of 4000nmi than the B737 max8 with only 3550nmi of range?

Indeed. But I wonder what happened to Tigerair order of 39 A320neos? Is it a firm order or only MOU? If it is a firm order, then Scoot will probably be left with too many planes...

Scoot operates 42 aircraft, comprising 25 A320-family jets and 17 787s. It has 39 A320neos and three 787-9s on order.

If Scoot takes on all the 17 B737-800 from Silk Air (average age 3.3 years now) and the 39 A320neos ordered and after considering the retirement of of the present aircrafts in service, Scoot will looking at operating with almost 50 narrow-body planes in the not too distant future! That is double its present narrow-body fleet size!

Apparently, this announcement of the transfer of B737-800s from Silk Air to Scoot shouldn't have come as a surprise as Scoot CEO has in end May 2018 spoken about expanding its fleet to 70 planes by 2022!

Scoot expanding to make up for lost time, to grow fleet to 70 planes by 2022

Is there a possibility they would transfer some A320neos to Vistara ? Seems like way too much narrowbodies in Scoot's hands.

                    Man.
The group ordered, so the group have them. Iam saying that the expansion of into destinations longer than 6hours with narrowbodies should have been made with SQ rather than MI and if the 737 is required to do such expansion than they should have been ordered and configured for SQ.

It was wrong to order narrowbody Boeing airplanes for MI. But now the Max planes will eventually ending up with SQ livery and configuration anyway. Just that they waste money on the way to reality.

I don’t think so. Vistara has already set its sights on an all-new narrowbody (and widebody) order of their own.

Given that Scoot returns their leased A319s and A320s by the time all their ordered A320neos and ex-Silk 737-800s have been delivered, there will be just short of 70 aircraft which is quite a measly figure when compared to regional LCC competitors such as AirAsia and Lion Air.

An excerpt from Blue Swan Daily about Scoot taking over Silk Air B738-800

Blue Swan and CAPA have since learned that the new SIA Group fleet plan has all 17 of SilkAir’s 737-800s transferring to Scoot over the next three years.

Under the newly revised fleet plan that includes the transfer of 17 737-800s from SilkAir, Scoot will reach 70 aircraft more than a year earlier (ie. by 2021 rather than 2022) and will more than double its fleet over the five-year period.

The transfer of routes and aircraft should improve SIA Group’s position in the short haul market. Scoot has a much lower cost structure than SilkAir and therefore can compete more effectively in price sensitive markets.

Scoot recently introduced a new corporate structure that mimics SIA, the latest in several steps to align Scoot more closely with its parent. Several executives with independent LCC experience have unfortunately left as Scoot took over Tigerair and as Scoot has restructured.

The potential loss of LCC DNA was identified by CAPA as a threat in a SWOT analysis on Scoot that was published in May-2018. “Scoot, in many respects, no longer looks and feels like an LCC,” CAPA stated. “There is a risk that it may also lose its LCC mindset and culture as SIA involvement increases.

Scoot in some respects is becoming the new SilkAir, taking on a feeder role under SIA – but with a lower cost structure than SilkAir that enables the group to better compete for local traffic in a market segment dominated by LCCs.

SilkAir has 32 737 MAX 8s on order, which means eventually SIA will operate an all-MAX narrowbody fleet of 37 aircraft. This represents growth of four aircraft compared to the current SilkAir fleet. While SilkAir will be transferring several short haul routes to SIA, the group is expected to grow its medium haul full service narrowbody operation.

Under SIA, the narrowbody product and network will be significantly different than the current SilkAir product and network. Hence Scoot in some respects will become the new SilkAir. While the upcoming changes at the SIA Group should improve the group’s long term positioning there are obvious drawbacks as Scoot moves away from the typical LCC model.

There are many secondary cities in SE Asia where people are not willing to pay the premium of SilkAir. Air Asia are able to open up such destinations and rapidly expand, even though she is mostly and O&D airlines (AirasiaX does not the the network compare to SQ).

The expansion of Scoot in short haul make perfect sense. It will open up or allow SIA group to compete effectively in cities such as Pontianak, Miri, Bintulu, Nha Trang, Urumqi, Changchun, Trengganu to name a few -- which do not have premium demand to warrant a SilkAir.

As we know, in another 2 years or so, MI will cease to exist and its routes will be transferred to either SQ (operating narrowbodies) or TR. I thought it would be fun to speculate which airlines will inherit the different routes. My guess:

                            Balikpapan - TR
                            Bandung - TR
                            Bengaluru - SQ
                            Cairns - TR
                            Cebu - TR
                            Changsha - TR
Chengdu - mix of SQ and TR
Chennai - TR (retain existing SQ flight)
                            Chiang Mai - TR

Overall I don't see that SQ management will relinquish so many routes to TR as predicted by 259850, afterall SQ would also have a sizable narrowbody fleet as well and there are significant transfer traffic to these secondary cities which would appreciate SQ presence.
